Women's Tennis Bounces Back at Bentley, 6-1

WALTHAM, Mass. (October 6, 2021) - Stonehill College, ranked No. 2 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, swept singles play to overcome dropping the doubles point on its way to a 6-1 triumph over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Brandeis University this afternoon.

The Details

  • Seniors Emma Markaryan and Samantha Ormesher led the way for Stonehill as double-winners on the afternoon. The duo combined to earn the Skyhawks lone doubles win with their 6-1 victory at No. 1, as Bentley clinched the doubles point with their wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
  • Stonehill overcame the doubles deficit by sweeping the six singles matches. Junior Cristina Solorzano Valencia, ranked No. 4 in the ITA East Region singles rankings, sparked the rally with her 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles against Bentley junior Makena Romagnano.
  • Ormesher followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Bentley senior Alessa Matuty for Stonehill, while junior Steffi Antao, ranked No. 10 in the ITA East singles rankings, pulled the Skyhawks within a point of the match win with her 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against freshman Maria Mella.
  • Junior Lily Peter provided the match clinching point for Stonehill with her 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against sophomore Remi LeSage.
  • Markaryan added a win at No. 3 singles for Stonehill, while freshman Marissa Such chipped in a win at No. 6 singles for the Skyhawks.
  • Romagnano and Matuty clinched the doubles point for Bentley with their 7-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles after LeSage and junior Zoe Chin notched a 6-4 decision at No. 3.

Stonehill (5-2, 5-2 NE10) returns to action on Saturday, when it visits East Region No. 1 Franklin Pierce University for an NE10 clash at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, October 13, to host the University of New Haven at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Bentley (2-4, 2-4 NE10) hosts regionally ranked Southern New Hampshire University tomorrow at 3 p.m.
