Panthers take NE10 matchup of regionally-ranked opponents

EASTON, Mass. (September 11, 2021) – Adelphi University, ranked No. 6 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, delivered a 7-0 victory over No. 2-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Adelphi junior Louisa Junghanna led four double-winners for the Panthers, who opened their NE10 schedule with the win. She combined with classmate Amanda Franstedt for a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles that clinched the doubles point for the Panthers.
  • Franstedt, junior Julia Kielan and sophomore Carolina Chaves were also double-winners for the Panthers in the match.
  • Juniors Cristina Solorzano Valencia and Steffi Antao, ranked No. 3 in the ITA East Region doubles rankings, knocked off the Adelphi top pairing of senior Barbie Quagliardi and freshman Caterina Federici at No. 1 doubles, with a 6-4 victory.

How it Happened

  • Junghanna and Franstedt clinched the doubles point with their 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles before Solorzano Valencia and Antao claimed a win at No. 1.
  • Franstedt, Kielan and Chaves clinched the win for the Panthers with their wins on the bottom half of the ladder.
  • Franstedt defeated Stonehill senior Samantha Ormesher 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
  • Kielan notched a 6-2 6-3 win at No. 5 singles against junior Lily Peter.
  • Chaves added a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles for the Panthers.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill has been picked to finish third in the NE10 preseason poll behind defending champions Franklin Pierce University and regional rival Adelphi University, with one first place vote. Saint Anselm has been picked tenth.
  • Solorzano Valencia has now won her last nine singles decisions dating back to last season. She has posted a combined singles and doubles record of 49-14 over her Stonehill career, including a 23-4 singles record and 26-7 doubles mark.
  • Solorzano Valencia and Antao have also won ten straight double matching dating back to last season.

Stonehill (1-1, 1-1 NE10) next competes at the USTA/ITA Division II East Regional on Friday through Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, home of the U.S. Open. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, September 22, to host American International College for an NE10 match at 3 p.m. Adelphi (2-0, 1-0 NE10) visits Bentley University tomorrow at 9 a.m.
