Stockwell's school-record leads five event winners for Skyhawks

WALTHAM, Mass. (January 17, 2024) – Stonehill College returned to the pool for the first time in nearly two months and registered a dual meet victory over Brandeis University at Linsey Pool tonight.

Stonehill outscored Brandeis 104-61 by way of five event wins and 14 top three finishes on the night. Senior Sydney Stockwell led Stonehill's five event winners with a school-record performance in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing first in 1:01.91 – good for the second-fastest time for the event in the Northeast Conference this season. She broke the previous school mark of 1:02.71 by sophomore Kristy Barry at the very same pool a day shy of exactly one year ago. Barry was close behind in second in a season-best 1:02.92, while postgrad Nika Sokolova rounded out the top four in 1:03.80.

Stockwell added a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke in 27.49-seconds, while sophomore Mazy Karuzis finished fourth in 28.62-seconds and freshman Grace Idowu was fifth in 28.97.

Idowu shattered the program-record in the 50-yard butterfly, taking first place in 26.92-seconds – nearly a second faster than the previous mark of 27.25 by Stockwell two years ago. Barry followed in third in a personal-best 27.69. Idowu's time is is currently sixth-fastest in the NEC this season.

Stonehill swept the top three spots, out of eight, in the 50-yard breaststroke, led by sophomore Taylor Belanger in first with her time of 31.01-seconds to edge junior teammate Jami Hepburn in second at 31.36. Barry rounded out the top three in a season-best 32.10-seconds.

Belanger was also scored second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.56-seconds, followed by Sokolova in second at 26.75. Senior Katie Keating posted a time of 26.54-seconds, while junior Sharlotte Lundell finished in 26.81-seconds and senior Maddie Conley clocked in at 26.92-seconds.

Stonehill won both relays on the night, starting with the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.16. Stockwell swam the opening backstroke leg, followed by Hepburn for the breaststroke, sophomore Azia Koser for the butterfly and then Barry for the freestyle anchor.

Barry and Stockwell also swam legs for Stonehill in the 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:40.75 as the Skyhawks swept the top two spots with the B-relay finishing in 1:46.43. Barry completed the lead leg in 25.75-seconds, before Belanger swam the second leg in 25.56 and then Stockwell clocked in with a 24.96-second split for the third leg, before Idowu completed the anchor leg in 24.48. Keating swam the lead leg for the B-relay in 26.65-seconds, while Karuzis completed the second in 27.07 and then Hepburn finished the third leg in 26.85-seconds, before sophomore Isabel Nelson swam the anchor leg in 25.86.

Sokolova added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 2:02.78. Conley finished fourth in a personal-best 2:05.50, while junior Julie Mastroianni placed fifth in 2:08.61.

Stonehill is right back in action on Saturday when it visits Siena College for a dual meet in upstate New York at noon. The Skyhawks next home meet is next Saturday, January 27, when it hosts Northeast Conference rival Merrimack College for Senior Day at Massasoit Community College at 1 p.m.
