Skyhawks notch four event wins, including two by Stockwell

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 12, 2023) – Stonehill College earned four event wins, including a sweep of the top three positions in the 100-yard butterfly, as Assumption University took a 136-122 dual meet victory at Plourde Recreation Center this afternoon.

Senior Sydney Stockwell earned two of Stonehill's four event wins on the afternoon, adding another backstroke win to her weekend by taking first in the 50-yard backstroke today in 28.60-seconds after winning both the 100 and 200-yard events yesterday at Babson College. Stockwell also earned a win in the 50-yard butterfly in a season-best 28.19-seconds, with sophomore Azia Koser third in 29.05 and senior Katie Keating fourth in 29.38. Stockwell followed that up with a second place showing in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:03.05, while sophomore Kristy Barry finished third in 1:03.53. Postgrad Nika Sokolova won the 100-yard backstroke today with a time of 1:03.59.

After winning three individual events at Babson on Saturday, Barry added a win in the 100-yard butterfly to lead a Stonehill sweep of the top three positions in that event. She finished first in 1:03.60, just out-touching Keating's 1:03.61, while Koser clocked in at 1:04.46 for third. Koser added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.46,

Stonehill swimmers finished second through fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, led by freshman Grace Idowu in second in 26.17-seconds. Sophomore Isabel Nelson was third in 27.03-seconds, while freshman Sherri Danforth was fourth in a personal-best 27.37. Idowu was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.83-seconds, while Nelson placed fourth in 59.47 and Danforth sixth in 1:01.32.

Stonehill also had relays finish second and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Idowu, Sokolova, Karuzis and Nelson took second for the Skyhawks in 3:55.53, while the team of junior Julie Mastroianni, Koser, Danforth and senior Maddie Conley were third in 4:00.65.

Stonehill's 400-yard medley relay of Sokolova, junior Jami Hepburn, Stockwell and Idowu scored second place points with a time of 4:12.37. Sokolova swam the opening backstroke leg, followed by Hepburn with the breaststroke, Stockwell the butterfly and then Idowu completing the freestyle anchor leg.

  • Barry swam the 1000-yard freestyle for the first time this season and posted a personal-best time of 11:47.25.
  • Hepburn and sophomore Taylor Belanger finished second and third in the 50-yard breaststroke. Hepburn posted a time of 32.88-seconds, while Belanger finished in 33.31.
  • Hepburn was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.42, while Conley was fourth in a season-best 1:17.22.
  • Senior Morgan Gangi finished third in the 50-yard backstroke in a season-best 32.30-seconds, while freshman Isabella Rodriguez was fourth in 32.66.
  • Gangi was also sixth in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:08.97.
  • Sophomore Mazy Karuzis finished third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.05, while Mastroianni was fourth in 1:10.02.
  • Karuzis was third in the 500-yard backstroke as well with her time of 6:00.67, just in front of Mastroianni in fourth in 6:00.86.
  • Karuzis was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.51, Conley clocked in at 2:15.18 for fifth.

Stonehill returns to action next weekend, when it competes at the Harold Anderson Invitational, hosted by the University of Rhode Island at Tootell Aquatic Center in Kingston, Rhode Island, Friday through Sunday at 10 a.m., each day.
