Record Breaking Afternoon for Women's Swimming at Niagara

NIAGARA, N.Y. (November 4, 2023) – Stonehill College enjoyed a record-breaking afternoon with other personal bests along the way in a dual meet with Niagara University at Oxy Aquatic Center today. The Purple Eagles would finish with a 152-100 win in the head-to-head matchup.

Stonehill got its records falling early as its 200-yard medley relay finished second but turned in a school-record time of 1:48.48 in the first event of the day. Sophomore Kristy Barry swam the lead backstroke leg in 28.43-seconds, before junior Jami Hepburn completed the breaststroke leg in 30.08-seconds, with senior Sydney Stockwell swimming the butterfly leg in 25.92-seconds and then freshman Grace Idowu completing the freestyle anchor in 24.05-seconds. The team broke the previous record of 1:48.51 set at the 2023 Northeast Conference Championships, with a relay that included Stockwell and Hepburn.

Idowu set a school-record in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 24.72-seconds for fourth overall. She broke the previous mark of 25.29-seconds by Stockwell at the 2022 ECAC Winter Championships. Sophomore Taylor Belanger was fifth in 27.66-seconds, while Gangi took sixth in 28.53. Idowu also posted a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing second in 54.33-seconds to break the previous school mark of 54.58 by Stockwell at the 2023 NEC Championships. Junior Julie Mastroianni took fourth in the 100-free in 59.59-seconds.

Stockwell added two second place finishes in her backstroke events, starting with a school-record 57.69-second time in the 100-yard backstroke – just 0.17-seconds shy of first. She broke her own previous mark of 57.85-seconds at the 2023 NEC Championships. Sophomore Mazy Karuzis and senior Morgan Gangi placed fifth and sixth in 1:02.64 and a personal-best 1:07.83, respectively. Stockwell also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best 2:09.37, while postgrad Nika Sokolova took fifth in a season-best 2:16.95.

Hepburn and Barry swept the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Hepburn winning with her season-best time of 1:07.34 and Barry posting a personal best of 1:08.65 for second place. Belanger finished fifth in 1:14.06.

Barry also posted a season-best in the 200-yard breaststroke of 2:31.32 to finish third, while senior Maddie Conley was fourth in 2:39.61 and Gangi fifth in 2:49.59. Barry capped her day with a second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley relay in 4:45.74.

Stonehill closed the day out with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.06. Idowu swam the lead leg in 24.86-seconds, her second official sub-25-second 50 of the day, while Belanger completed the second leg in 26.74, and then Karuzis swam the third leg in 25.58 and then Isabel Nelson completed the anchor leg in 25.88.

  • Stonehill swimmers finished third through fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, led by postgrad Sokolova with a time of 2:04.90 for third, followed by senior Katie Keating in fourth in a personal-best 2:05.97 and Conley fifth in 2:08.32.
  • Stockwell finished sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 59.78-seconds, while Keating took ninth in a season-best 1:01.92.
  • Karuzis finished third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:40.90, while Sokolova was fourth with a season-best time of 5:45.78 and Mastroianni fifth in a season-best 5:45.82.
  • Koser finished third in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:28.78. She was also fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:20.72.

Stonehill is right back in action next weekend with a pair of dual meets on Saturday and Sunday. The Skyhawks will face Babson College on Saturday at Morse Pool in Babson Park, Massachusetts, at noon, before visiting Assumption University on Sunday at noon.
