Women's Swimming Finishes Day 1 & 2 of NEC Championship

2023 NEC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship

GENEVA, OHIO. (February 22, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's swimming team has been competing in the 2023 Northeast Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championship meet at the Spire Institute Pool in Geneva, Ohio for the past two days. The team has competed in various events so far, including the 800 free relay event.

Head Coach Matthew Distler speaks on how he has felt the team has done so far in the championship meet:

"Overall I am very pleased with the team's performance so far. We are embracing the opportunity to compete at this level and continuing to learn and grow as a unit. We have had some great swims so far and our energy as a group has improved with each session. I am looking forward to the next few days of competition as we get into some of our stronger events."

Tuesday, February 21 – NEC Championships Day 1 

Timed Finals – 6 PM
800-yard freestyle relay—two heats  "B" then "A"  

Wednesday, February 22 – NEC Championships Day 2

Prelims – 10 AM
500-yard freestyle
200-yard individual medley
50-yard freestyle

Finals – 6 PM
500-yard freestyle
200-yard individual medley
50-yard freestyle
200-yard medley relay "B" then "A"

So far, the Skyhawks have competed in various distance events. To start off day one of the meet, Stonehill competed in a single event with two teams swimming in the event; the 800-yard freestyle relay. 

After the first day of events, the Skyhawks were trailing with 18 points.

On day 2 of the meet, the preliminary time trials began at 10 am, where multiple Skyhawks competed:

Highlights

  • Freshman Kristy Barry competed in the 200-yard IM, finishing with a prelim time of 2:11.26, a new personal best. Making it to the C-final 200-yard IM race, Barry placed 22nd with a time of 2:11.28.
  • In the 200-yard medley relay, the Skyhawks had one team competing, consisting of junior captain Sydney Stockwell, freshman Taylor Belanger, sophomore Sharlotte Lundell, and sophomore Jami Hepburn competed and finished in 1:48.51, placing eighth overall, and grabbing the best season time for the 200-yard medley relay for the Skyhawks.

  • Junior captain Maddie Conley competed in the 500-yard freestyle, earning a prelim time of 5:33.10
  • Sophomore Julie Mastroianni swam in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a prelim time of 5:40.99. a new personal best
  • Freshman Azia Koser swam in the 500-yard freestyle, snagging a prelim time of 5:30.58.
  • Sophomore Sharlotte Lundell swam in the 200-yard IM, earning a prelim time of 2:17.78.
  • Sophomore Jami Hepburn swam in the 50-yard freestyle, earning a prelim time of 25.44, a new personal best.
  • Junior Katie Keating competed in the 50-yard freestyle, snagging a prelim time of 25.91.
  • Junior Morgan Gangi took to the pool to compete in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing her prelim time in 27.17, tying her personal best.
  • Freshman Isabel Nelson swam in the 50-yard freestyle, grabbing a prelim time of 25.79, a new personal best.
  • Freshman Taylor Belanger competed in the 50-yard freestyle, reaching the finish line in 25.73, a new personal best.
  • Another team of Stonehill swimmers swam in the 200-yard medley relay, sophomore Sofiya Gobora, junior Morgan Gangi, junior Katie Keating, and senior captain Nika Sokolova, snagging a time of 1:51.92.
