Women's Swimming Crushes First Official Division One Meet Under New Leadership

 

Stockwell posts four event wins to lead Skyhawks in season opener

EASTON, Mass. (October 15, 2022) – Stonehill College women's swimming hosted their first official division one meet with new head coach  Matthew Distler. The Skyhawks won their first dual meet today, with multiple event winners. The Skyhawks earned themselves 148 points, with Merrimack earning 112.

Highlights 

  • Junior Sydney Stockwell won big today for the Skyhawks, earning herself four event wins. Stockwell won in the 200-yard medley relay, along with Taylor Belanger, Katie Keating, and Isabel Nelson, with a time of 1:53.34. Stockwell also earned herself a win in the 100-yard backstroke (59.87), the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.31), and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.41).
  • Freshman Kristy Barry stood out in her collegiate debut. Barry wrapped up her day in the 200-yard individual medley relay and placed first with a time of 2:19.38, as well as finishing second to Stockwell in the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.73) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.65).
  • Sophomore Jami Hepburn had a big meet day as well, winning the women's 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.81), to go with a second to Belanger in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.54) by less than a quarter of a second. She also turned in a third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (27.11)

    Nelson won the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.14) in her her collegiate debut, while classmate Belanger was also a winner in her first collegiate meet in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.25). Nelson was also second in teh 100-yard freestyle (58.25).

More Results

  • Freshman Azia Koser took second with a school-record time in the 1000-yard freestyle in her first collegiate event (11:32.20). She added another second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:41.34).
  • Sophomore Sofiya Gobora finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.96), less than a second behind Nelson. Gobora also took third in the 100-yard free (59.55).
  • Junior Morgan Gangi earned a key second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:43.64).
  • Junior Katie Keating took third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.34). She also finished third in the 100-yard fly (1:03.79).
  • Freshman Mazy Karuzis capped a sweep of the top three positions in the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.00).
