Shaw free-position marker with 1.6-seconds remaining lifts Paladins to victory

GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 7, 2023) – Junior Sophie Shaw's third goal of the season on a free-position attempt with 1.6-seconds to play lifted Furman University to a 12-11 triumph over Stonehill College in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Paladin Stadium this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Senior Meagan Beal totaled a game-high four points with three goals and an assist to lead Furman, collecting six draw controls and a caused turnover.
  • Sophomore Lily Rathbun preserved the win with 12 saves and collected three ground balls.
  • Sophomore Anna Roser also netted three goals for the Paladins and recorded two caused turnovers, while senior Hannah Dintino contributed four points with two goals and two assists, adding two draws.
  • Sophomore Paige Harman chipped in two goals, while freshman Reynolds Hester dished two assists for the Paladins.
  •  All-Americans Emma Sullivan and Victoria Butler each scored a team-high three goals for Stonehill. Sullivan filled out the box score with four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Butler added two draws.
  • Senior All-American Lydia Rudden totaled three points with a goal and two assists for the Skyhawks, while junior Lilly Leach contributed two goals, four draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover.
  • Junior Claire Smith finished with a career-high nine saves in the Stonehill goal.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill battled back from a three-goal deficit after Roser's third goal of the game with 11:49 left in regulation to force the fourth tie of the contest on freshman Emily LaPia's first collegiate goal on her first shot with a free-position tally with 1:49 to go.
  • Sullivan led the Stonehill rally with two of her three goals with 8:10 and 2:57 to play.
  • Shaw drew a free-position attempt with 4.1-seconds left at the other end, and then lifted Furman to the win with her third goal of the year with 1.6-ticks remaining.
  • Stonehill scored the first three goals of the contest, grabbing a two-goal lead after a quarter of play on unassisted tallies from Rudden and Butler less than two minutes into the contest, before Sullivan extended the lead 2:05 into the second off a Rudden pass.
  • Furman's first five goal run, sparked by two Rosen goals and a goal and assist each from Dintino and Beal, pushed the Paladins in front after Libby Bowen's first goal of the season with 7:07 left in the half.
  • Leach ended the run with her first goal of the game with 3:22 to play, but Harman's first goal of the year off a Dintino feed, sent Furman into halftime with a two-goal advantage (6-4).
  • Stonehill scored four goals over the first five minutes of the second half, including a pair by Butler, to reclaim a two-goal lead of its own after Butler's fifth of the season with 10:35 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Furman followed with its second five goal run, including two goals by Beal, to grab its three-goal advantage after Roser's third 3:11 into the fourth quarter.

  • Sullivan has three goals in back-to-back games and multiple goals for the fourth time in five games this season.
