Royals seal win with 9-3 run over final 28-minutes, led by Joyce and Favreau

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 4, 2023) – Queens University of Charlotte outscored Stonehill College 9-3 over the final 28-minutes of the contest, including 5-1 in the fourth quarter, to close out an 18-12 victory in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Dickson Field this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Senior Shannon Donovan led Queens with five points on three goals and two assists, adding three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Senior Stephanie Joyce scored four goals for the Royals, while classmate Shannon Kingston and freshman Kayleen Favreau each contributed two goals and an assist.
  • Junior Caroline Kraemer and postgrad Sharn Muffett split the goalkeeping duties for Queens. Kraemer made three saves over the first half with a ground ball and caused turnover, while Muffett had four second-half stops, with two ground balls.
  • Senior All-American Lydia Rudden posted a season-high eight points to lead Stonehill, matching her career-best with four goals to go with a season-best four assists.
  • All-America postgrad Emma Sullivan scored a season-high three goals for the Skyhawks, with four draw controls and a caused turnover, while sophomore Sofia D'Agostino added two goals.
  • Senior All-American Victoria Butler chipped in with a career-high matching nine draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover for Stonehill, adding a goal.
  • Junior Claire Smith made her second career start in goal for Stonehill and finished with a career-high five saves over three quarters of play, while sophomore Sarah Faley made two saves in the third quarter for the Skyhawks.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill held a two-goal lead (5-3) after a quarter of play, answering two opening goals from Queens with a 5-1 run, keyed by two-straight goals from Rudden, who also dished out an assist.
  • Queens opened the second quarter with four-straight goals – two each from Donovan and Kingston, while Donovan also dished an assist, to take a two-goal lead of its own (7-5) midway through the frame.
  • The teams traded goals over the remainder of the half as the Royals held that two goal edge (9-7) at the break.
  • Sullivan and Butler scored goals over the opening two minutes of the third quarter to pull Stonehill level.
  • Queens answered with another four-goal run, sparked by two goals from Joyce, to open a 13-9 lead with 2:37 remaining in the third.
  • Stonehill rallied with goals from D'Agostino and Rudden, who also assisted on the D'Agostino tally, to pull back within two (13-11) heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Queens outscored the Skyhawks 5-1 in the fourth quarter, though, including two by sophomore Alexi Flores, while Favreau notched a goal and assist, to seal the win.

  • Rudden has multi-goal games in two-straight contests for Stonehill.
  • Butler's career-high matching nine draw controls today give her 108 in 39 career games played.
  • This afternoon marked the second meeting all-time between Stonehill and Queens, both of which are in the first year of their NCAA Division I transition as former NCAA Division II women's lacrosse powers. The Royals evened the all-time series with this afternoon's win.

Stonehill (0-4, 0-0 NEC) returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Furman University for its second matchup of Spring Break at noon. The Skyhawks' next home game is Saturday, March 25 when they host Wagner College for their first Northeast Conference home game at W.B.
