Softball Falls to Assumption, 4-1

Skyhawks record two hits in the game

Theilgard registered her first-career sacrifice fly

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 26, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team was tripped up by Assumption College's offense Thursday afternoon at Marsols Field in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the Greyhounds took the third game of the series, 4-1, in Northeast-10 Conference play.

For the Skyhawks, Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) and Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) tallied the teams' only hits. Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy) drove in the lone run for Stonehill, as Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) tagged up from third on her sacrifice fly.

Rennie drove the ball up the middle for the first hit of the game and Theilgard walked in the top of the first inning, but Assumption's Kendal Roy struck out her first to batters stranding both runners on base for the Skyhawks.

In the bottom of the frame, Brooke Murphy led off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out, but Alyssa Beaton sent one over the fence for an early two-run lead, 2-0, in favor of the Greyhounds. After an early pitching change, Stonehill saw a batter get hit by a pitch, but the inning was retired with a fly out to center field and a pop up.

Stonehill stranded another runner on base in the top of the second as Hartman singled through the left side and Roy was able to strike out another two batters. In the lead off spot, Kayla Peabody launched the second homerun of the game, extending the lead to three, 3-0. Assumption tallied another hit in the inning, but the Skyhawks halted the offense with two fly outs and a grounder, keeping two on base at the end of the inning.

Ricker led off the third with Stonehill's second walk and on a sacrifice bunt she advanced to second. Rennie reached on an error to put runners on the corners for Stonehill and Theilgard tallied her first sacrifice fly deep enough to score Ricker from third, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.

Ricker was the only runner that crossed home for the Skyhawks

Assumption was able to get the run back in the bottom of the frame, as Stephanie Menard singled and continued to move around the bases on a ground out and an error. On strike out swinging, Caitlin Mirabell drew the throw to second base as she was stealing and advanced to third on an error, giving Menard time to cross home for a three-run lead again, 4-1.

The Greyhounds retired six-straight between the fourth and fifth innings, and the only hit for the rest of the game came from Assumption in the bottom of the sixth inning as Stonehill was outhit, 5-2 and five errors were recorded between the two teams.
