RINDGE, N.H. (April 20, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team saw Franklin Pierce University get ahead early in the final game of their three-game series Friday afternoon at Bisaccia Softball Complex and take a 5-3 win over the Skyhawks in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play.
For the Skyhawks, Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Academy) went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy) batted 1-for-3 with two RBI and Gianna Azzato (East Meadow, New York.East Meadow) registered the other RBI. Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy), Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford), and Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) each crossed home for Stonehill's three runs of the game.
As both teams were retired in the first inning seeing three-straight batters get out, the Ravens allowed only one hit from the Skyhawks in the top of the second inning from Hartman as she drove the ball to center field but was stranded on base after a groundout to end the top half of the inning. Franklin Pierce took the advantage in the bottom of the second, as Gina Hinckley launched a two-run homerun to right center for a 2-0 lead after Dominique Bisaccia tripled to right field for the extra run.
Franklin Pierce sat down three straight batters for Stonehill in the third and fourth innings, as the Ravens continued stringing together hits in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to three, 3-0. Jaclyn Cortese led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground out. Hinckley followed with another ground out to first base, but Cortese had enough time to cross home for the third run of the game.
The Ravens saw two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off a two-run double to right center from Aubrey Bianco that scored Cassidy Sorenson and Ashley Rosario from first and second, respectively. Stonehill responded in the top of the sixth with a one out single up the middle with the bases loaded, as Theilgard drove home Ricker and Peterson with the throw one-hopping away from the cutoff allowing the runners to advance. Before a grounder that turned into a double play, Rennie was able to cut the deficit to two, 5-3, crossing home before the third out of the inning.
The Skyhawks attempted to rally the hits together in the top of the seventh, as Hartman tallied her second hit of the game to left field but was throw out as she advanced on a fielder's choice putting Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) on first base. The Ravens struck out the final two batters of the game, as Stonehill stranded its fourth runner of the game.
Stonehill (8-22, 7-13 NE10) will travel on to Vermont to face Saint Michael's College in their three-game series, starting with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at Doc Jacobs Field. The two teams will face off again on Sunday, April 22 at noon for a single game.
With Stonehill's regular season wrapping up in the coming week, the Skyhawks will be hosting a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Strikeout For Cancer game on Friday, April 27 against Saint Anselm College at 3:00 p.m. on Fr. Gartland Field. The Skyhawks will be collecting donations at the field on gameday and will continue to collect funds on their GoFundMe page. All proceeds will go directly to the Dana-Farber Cancer Foundation. At the game, the Skyhawks will be honoring all those who have battled or are currently battling all types of cancer. Bracelets and t-shirts will be on site at the game for purchase.
