No. 24 Saint Anselm College Gets Past Softball, 4-2, Before Weather Halts Game

Game gets called in the fifth inning for weather

Hartman tallies one of two Skyhawk RBI

EASTON, Mass. (April 27, 2018) – The Stonehill College softball team scored two in the bottom of the fifth against No. 24 Saint Anselm College, but the game was called due to weather, as the Hawks collected the victory, 4-2, in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play on Friday afternoon at Fr. Gartland Field.

For the Skyhawks, Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Connecticut/Mercy) went 1-for-2 at the plate with her ninth double of the season, while Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) batted 1-for-2 with a run scored. Taylor Whaley (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) also crossed home plate for a run scored in a pinch run situation, while Hannah Ricker (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Caroline Casey (East Moriches, New York/Center Moriches) each recorded the RBI.

In the first inning, neither team was able to get a run across, but both teams stranded a runner. At the top of the second frame, Shannon Colson led the Hawks with a walk and rounded the bases getting to third on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded and another two walks, the Hawks put the run on the board on a wild pitch as Colson scored and Shannon McLaughlin and Maddison Leite moved up a base. Saint Anselm got the bases loaded for the second time and Kazi Walker (Quaker Hill, Connecticut/Waterford) came in relief forcing a ground out to leave the bases loaded.

The Hawks' Morgan Perry retired six-straight Skyhawks in the second and third innings, but Theilgard broke the no-hitter with her ninth double of the season to right center and Stonehill stranded her on base in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Saint Anselm put three more runs across in the top of the fifth inning, 4-0, off four hits and an error. With back-to-back singles, the Hawks got the bases loaded once again on a single to first base. O'Connor reached on a fielder's choice and Thompson was out at third on the play for the second out of the inning driving in Murphy from third, 2-0. Leite followed with a double to left field that rolled to the fence, clearing the bases for a four-run lead, 4-0.

Ricker walked in one of the Skyhawk runs for her fourth RBI of the season

Stonehill's bats reacted in the bottom of the frame with Hartman singling to left field for the lead off hit. After an error and a single through the right side, the Skyhawks got the bases loaded for the first time in the game and with four balls, Casey walked in the first run for the Purple and White. Casey was then out on a fielder's choice at second base, while Ricker rallied the second RBI of the game, bringing home Whaley from third. The Hawks retired the side with a line out and a ground out to win the first game of the series, 4-2.
