COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 1, 2010) – Stonehill College opened its Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a doubleheader split at Saint Michael’s College in softball action at Doc Jacobs Field this afternoon. Saint Michael’s plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a 5-4 victory in game one, before Stonehill answered with a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Freshman Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) paced the Stonehill offense as she hit a combined 5-for-8 with two doubles and two runs scored. Classmate Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) was 4-for-8 with two doubles and two RBI, while sophomore Lindsay Bock (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI on the afternoon.

Senior Lindsay Bernard (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley) led Saint Michael’s by hitting a combined 4-for-5 with a home run, double, two runs scored and three RBI on the afternoon. Classmate Katelyn Billings (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) batted 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Senior Kelly Egan (Milford, Mass./Marian) delivered a two-out RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Saint Michael’s to a 5-4 victory in game one. The run came after Stonehill knotted the score with two runs in the top of the frame.

Egan finished 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI. Bernard batted 2-for-2 with a double, home run and three RBI, while senior Heather French (Sheldon, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) hit 2-for-3 with a stolen base, RBI and run scored. Billings was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Freshman Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) picked up the win (4-3) in the circle for Saint Michael’s, allowing the four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the complete game effort. She was also 1-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored at the plate for the Purple Knights.

Eisenmann led Stonehill by batting 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and two RBI. Marchand hit 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, while Bock and junior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) were both 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Sophomore Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss (2-3) for Stonehill, yielding just the one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in three innings of relief work. Sophomore Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) allowed four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 3.2 innings.

Saint Michael’s set the table for Egan in the seventh with a leadoff walk by French before junior Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) put the pair in scoring position with a one-out double. Krantz got the second out, before issuing a walk and then Egan stepped to the plate with the winning single to center.

Stonehill had knotted the score in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Eisenmann with two out. The Skyhawks had another run just prior to the Eisenmann single thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice.

Stonehill held a 2-1 lead after three and a half innings on a second inning home run by Bock and an RBI single from Langlois in the fourth. Saint Michael’s opened a 4-2 lead with three in the bottom of the fourth. French notched an RBI single before Bernard poked a two-run double.

Senior Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) didn’t allow an earned run over seven full innings and Marchand and freshman Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) paced the offense as Stonehill earned a split with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

Mendall earned the win in the circle (3-1), allowing just the one unearned run on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk over the seven innings for Stonehill.

Marchand hit 3-for-4 with a double and run scored to pace the offense, while Wilcox batted 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and RBI, while sophomore Sarah Stumper (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) belted her first home run of the season in four at bats.

Bernard hit 2-for-3 with a run scored for Saint Michael’s, while Billings finished 1-for-2.

Egan took the loss (2-3) for the Purple Knights, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks over four innings.

Saint Michael’s struck first by scoring its lone run in the bottom of the first inning. Bernard singled up the middle and later scored when Losi reached on a Stonehill error with two out. Stonehill answered right away with the tying run in the second on Stumper’s two-out home run to left center.

Stonehill took the lead with three in the third as Wilcox delivered a two-run single through the left side with one out. She later scored the fourth and final run on a single down the leftfield line by Abarr.

Stonehill (6-6-1, 1-1 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits Southern New Hampshire University for an NE-10 doubleheader starting at noon. The Skyhawks open their home schedule on Monday with a makeup doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts Lowell at Gartland Field starting at 3 p.m.
