Golden Lions roll to 9-2 win in game one behind 14-hit attack
Stavola’s 19-strikeout, one-hit shutout in nightcap keys 1-0 win in eight innings

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (March 28, 2010) – Dowling College swept a doubleheader against Stonehill College in non-conference softball action on Long Island this afternoon. The Golden Lions rolled to a 9-2 win in game one, before edging the Skyhawks 1-0 in eight innings in the nightcap.

Senior Kristina DeMeo (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) led the Dowling offensive attack which piled up 19 hits on the afternoon by going a combined 5-for-7 with four doubles, a run scored and RBI. Junior Lisa Compitello (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) was 3-for-8 with a double and three runs scored, while freshman Stephanie Tarango (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda) chipped in with a team-best three RBI on the afternoon.

Junior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) and freshman Courtney Marchand (Dracut, Mass./Timberlane Regional) both led Stonehill with two hits on the afternoon. Freshman Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) drove in one of the Skyhawks two runs on the day.

Dowling racked up 14 hits and scored in each of its first five at bats in posting a 9-2 victory in game one of today’s doubleheader.

Kristin DeMeo was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles, an RBI and run scored to lead the Dowling attack. Freshman Danielle Messina (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) hit 2-for-3, while junior Kristen Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Lisa Compitello chipped in by batting 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Junior Katie Cameron (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) collected the win in the circle as she allowed two runs, just one earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks over five innings. Classmate Jamie Stalter (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) closed the game out with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.

Kelsey Wilcox paced Stonehill by hitting 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Courtney Marchand and sophomore Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) were both 1-for-3 with a run scored. Katy Abarr finished 2-for-4 in the contest.

Senior Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) suffered the loss in the circle for Stonehill, surrendering six runs, four earned, on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2.2 innings.

Stonehill opened the scoring in the top of the first as Marchand walked and later scored on an error in the infield. Wilcox followed with an RBI double to center that drove in Stryker who had reached with a bunt single. Dowling answered right away with a pair in the home half of the first. Sophomore Emily Slack (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) posted an RBI double and later scored on a single through the left side by sophomore Jessica Roque (Warren Grove, N.Y./Pilgrim School).

Dowling took the lead for good with a single run in the second, then broke the game open with a three-run third, taking advantage of two Stonehill errors. Weeks had an RBI single and later scored on an error, along with Roque. The Golden Lions extended their lead with a run in the fourth on an RBI double by DeMeo, before closing out the scoring with a pair in the fifth on a two-run single by Tarango.

Dowling took advantage of a leadoff double by Compitello and RBI single through the left side by Tarango in the eighth inning to edge Stonehill 1-0 and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Dowling sophomore Jessie Stavola (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton) and Stonehill sophomore Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) locked up in a pitchers dual in the circle. Stavola (4-2) was dominant, firing a one-hit shutout with an incredible 19 strikeouts and two walks over eight innings. Krantz (2-2) nearly matched her for seven innings, allowing the one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 7.1 innings.

Slack and Roque were both 1-for-2 at the plate for Dowling. DeMeo was 1-for-3 with her fourth double of the afternoon, while Compitello and Tarango both finished 1-for-4.

Marchand had the lone Stonehill hit, finishing 1-for-4. Stryker reached base with a walk and added a stolen base.

Stavola carried a no-hitter into the sixth before Marchand led off the inning with a single to left. Stryker advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt, but the Skyhawks stranded her there as Stavola struck out the next two batters to ease the threat.

That came just after Dowling failed to plate a run after loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. DeMeo led off with a double before sophomore Deana Torturici (Levittown, N.Y./General Douglas) reached on an error and Weeks walked. However, Krantz struck out the next two batters to retire the side and keep the game scoreless.

Stonehill (5-5-1, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday for their first home games of the season when it opens their Northeast-10 schedule with a doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts Lowell starting at 3 p.m. Dowling (9-9, 0-0 ECC) opens its East Coast Conference schedule at home against the New York Institute of Technology on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
