Men's Tennis Edges Wheaton, 5-4


Sophomore Nikolay Lisichenok posted his second three set win of the week to clinch today's win over Wheaton.

Bellio and Lisichenok are double-winners to fire Skyhawks to victory

EASTON, Mass. (April 14, 2016) – Stonehill College overcame a 2-1 deficit following doubles play to defeat Wheaton College 5-4 in non-conference men's tennis action on Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Sophomores Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led Stonehill to the comeback win by earning singles and doubles points. The duo earned the Skyhawks lone doubles win with an 8-6 decision at No. 1. Bellio followed that up by posting a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles against Wheaton senior Will White (Nantucket, Massachusetts/Cape Cod Academy), while Lisichenok grinded out his second three set win of the week with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback at No. 2 against freshman Jeremiah Ryser (Cross River, New York/Regis) to clinch the team victory.

Sophomore Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) and senior captain Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) also collected points for Stonehill with their singles wins. Gagnon topped sophomore Tyler Butler (Portland, Maine/Deering) 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 5 singles, while Tierney edged senior Jim Beaton (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.

Junior Alden Zeff (Stratham, New Hampshire/St. Stephen's Episcopal School) was a double-winner to lead Wheaton. He and White combined for a 9-7 triumph at No. 2 doubles. He followed that up with a back and forth 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles against sophomore Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM).

Stonehill (8-7, 4-3 NE-10) is right back on the courts on Saturday when it visits Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 11:30 a.m. Please note the start time has been pushed up 90-minutes from its originally scheduled start time of 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, April 23, to host Adelphi University, ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Wheaton (4-6, 1-2 NEWMAC) hosts Springfield College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
