Briers nets one goal and dishes out one assist to lead Warriors

EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2015) – Merrimack College, receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, handed the Stonehill College men's soccer team a 3-0 loss on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action at Skyhawk Field.

Senior forward Augusto Silva (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) opened the scoring when he received a ball played over the Stonehill backline from junior Alexander Alleyne (Swampscott, Massachusetts/St. Mary's) and one timed the pass over senior goalkeeper Luke Besse's (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham Regional) head for his team leading eighth goal of the season.

Senior defender Joseph Briers (Nottingham, England) led Merrimack offensively with one goal and one assist. Briers scored the Warriors second goal on the afternoon, placing a penalty shot past Besse for his fourth marker on the season. Briers also set up junior Jaime Cortes Torres (Seville, Spain) on a free kick he played from behind half, sending the ball into the Skyhawk box where Torres chested the ball down and drilled a shot into the far right post. The goal was Torres' fourth of the season.

Merrimack sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Rezende (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) earned the shutout with seven saves. Besse turned away three shots on the match.

Stonehill outshot Merrimack, 12-8, and won the corners matchup, 6-4.

The Skyhawks (5-7-2, 2-6-2 NE-10) host the University of New Haven on Saturday, October 24th at noon on Skyhawk Field. Merrimack (10-2-2, 6-2-2 NE-10) travels to no. 2 ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday for a 7 p.m. start.
