Freshman Michael Fraioli nets first collegiate goal for Skyhawks

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 5, 2015) – Junior midfielder Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Connecticut/South Windsor) scored early in the second half to lift the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Stonehill College this afternoon in the Catholic Cup championship match at Assumption College's Multi-Sport Stadium.

Saint Anselm freshman forward Emmet O'Callaghan (Weymouth, Massachusetts/BC High) opened the scoring in the 14th minute, when he beat Stonehill goalkeeper Luke Besse (Hamilton, Massachusetts/Hamilton-Wenham Regional) with a shot into the upper right corner of the net. Sophomore midfielder Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Massachusetts/Masconomet Regional) was credited with an assist on the goal.

The Skyhawks controlled play for much of the first half, recording ten shots and five corner kicks, but were unable to equalize until the 43rd minute, when a failed clearance bounced off Stonehill freshman forward Michael Fraioli (Scotia, New York/Scotia Glenville) and into the Saint Anselm net. Fraioli is the second freshman to score in the Catholic Cup for Stonehill, after classmate Justin Brehm (Latham, New York/Shaker) netted the game-winner in yesterday's 3-2 victory over Saint Michael's.

Saint Anselm regained the lead just under seven minutes into the second half, as junior midfielder Eddie Conroy (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Saint Thomas Aquinas) played a ball from the right side that Heckt was able to finish at the left post for the go-ahead goal.

Stonehill threatened late with three consecutive corner kicks in the 78th minute and a shot on goal by sophomore forward Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck) in the 79th, but the Skyhawks were unable to equalize a second time.

Saint Anselm junior goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) made three of his six saves in the second half, while Besse stopped one shot on the other end.

Stonehill outshot the Hawks by a 20-5 margin, and held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior forward Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon), and sophomores Connor O'Brien (Schenectady, New York/Guilderland Central) and Branco were named to the Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team, while Heckt earned Tournament MVP honors for Saint Anselm.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) will be on the road for a pair of non-conference contests in New York next week. The Skyhawks travel to Amherst for a noon matchup with Daemen College on Friday, before heading to Rochester to take on Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday at 3 p.m. Saint Anselm (2-0, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action next Saturday at Queens College.
