Field Hockey Earns First DI Win in OT, 4-3

Strickulis and Hickey net two goals apiece as Skyhawks defeat Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (September 11, 2022) – Stonehill College made history today when it picked up the first NCAA Division I win in program history with a 4-3 overtime triumph over Lindenwood University, also in its first year of transition from Division II, in a non-conference field hockey matchup at SportPort International.

Highlights

  • Junior All-American Raegan Hickey and freshman Makayla Strickulis each netted a pair of goals to lead Stonehill on the attack, with Strickulis' second of the day deciding the contest in overtime.
  • Sophomore Mia Simpson scored a pair of goals to lead Lindenwood, while postgrad Pauline Terwindt added a marker for the Lions.
  • Sophomore Shannon Conte logged her first collegiate win in goal for Stonehill, finishing with five saves to preserve the victory.
  • Sophomore Leah Brozovich made 14 saves in the Lindenwood cage to keep the Lions in the game.

How It Happened

  • Strickulis, who scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, provided the game-winner with 1:47 remaining in overtime, giving the Skyhawks their first NCAA Division I win, as well as the first career win for first year head coach Danielle Aviani.
  • Stonehill struck first in the game with Hickey's first goal of the season just 2:06 into the contest.
  • However, Lindenwood answered right back with Simpson's first of the day less than four minutes later.
  • Strickulis regained the lead for Stonehill just nine seconds before the end of the first quarter, netting the first goal of her collegiate career.
  • Lindenwood scored single goals in the second and third quarters to take the lead. Simpson's second of the day knotted the score for a second time 4:01 into the second, while Terwindt provided the Lions with a lead 5:56 into the second half.

    Hickey's second of the day six minutes later knotted the score and after neither team were able to convert in the fourth quarter, the game headed for overtime.
  • Brozovich made six of her 14 saves in the first quarter, while adding four each in the third and fourth, conceding just once in the second half.

Stonehill (1-3, 0-0 NEC) returns to action on the East Coast on Friday, when it visits Bryant University for a non-conference matchup at 4:30 p.m. Please note the time change on that contest from an earlier schedule of 6 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is scheduled for Friday, October 7, against former Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College, in a Northeast Conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 3 p.m. Lindenwood (1-2) is back in action on Friday when it visits Saint Thomas Aquinas College in New York at 4 p.m.
