Records Fall for Women's Swimming at ECAC Winter Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (December 4, 2022) – More records fell for Stonehill College as it rounded out its participation at the 2022 ECAC Winter Championships on Saturday night and Sunday, finishing the event, hosted by the Nassau County Aquatic Center with a tenth-place team finish. Ten Stonehill records in all fell over the course of the three-day event on Long Island.

Junior captain Sydney Stockwell broke her own 100-yard backstroke record for the second time on Saturday, finishing fourth in the B-final and 12th overall in 57.98-seconds. She had qualified 14th out of 80 entries earlier in the day in a then-record 58.02-seconds, bettering her previous mark of 58.60 at the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

On Sunday, Stockwell qualified for the C-final of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in third place (19th overall) in 2:07.08, once again, breaking her own previous school mark of 2:08.80 at the 2022 NE10 Championships. She qualified 22nd out of 50 entries earlier today in 2:11.0, leading five Skyhawk entries.

Sophomore Jami Hepburn finished second in the C-final and 18th overall in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.74, while freshman Taylor Belanger finished seventh in the C-final and 23rd overall in 1:08.37. Hepburn had qualified 19th out of the 58 entries in the event in 1:07.22, while Belanger had qualified 24th in 1:07.92.

This evening, Hepburn finished sixth in the C-final and 22nd overall for the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.53 after qualifying 23rd out of 50 entries in 2:29.24.

Stonehill set a new school-record in the 200-yard medley relay on Saturday, finishing 13th out of 28 entries in 1:49.40. The team of Stockwell, Belanger, sophomore Sharlotte Lundell and freshman Isabel Nelson broke the previous mark of 1:50.08 at the 2022 NE10 Championships. Stockwell recorded a school-record 26.72-second 50-yard backstroke split on the opening leg, before Belanger finished the breaststroke leg in 30.42-seconds and then Lundell posted a 27.00-second flat butterfly leg, before Nelson completed the freestyle anchor in 25.26-seconds.

The Skyhawks B-relay of freshman Kristy Barry, Hepburn, junior Katie Keating and freshman Mazy Karuzis finished 19th in 1:51.69.

Stonehill also clocked in a new school-record in the 800-yard freestyle relay to place 16th on Saturday night. The A-relay of Barry, sophomore Sofiya Gobora, freshman Azia Koser and senior Nika Sokolova osted a school-record time of 8:04.12, bettering the previous record of 8:13.56 at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships last February. Barry swam the lead leg in 1:59.80, with Gobora clocking in at 2:00.90 for the second leg and Koser posting a 2:03.13 split on the third leg, before Sokolova completed the anchor leg in 2:00.29.

Koser set a pair of individual school-records on Sunday. She narrowly missed qualifying for the C-final in the 200-yard butterfly this morning, placing 25th out of 41 entries in a school-record 2:14.91. She bettered the previous mark of 2:15.23 by Keating at the same event last year. Koser also scored a point and placed 24th in the 1650-yard freestyle this afternoon in a program-best 18:44.73. She broke the previous mark of 19:20.32 by junior captain Maddie Conley at the 2022 NE10 Championships.

Stonehill capped its record-breaking performances by placing 19th and 20th in the 400-yard freestyle relay this evening. The first Skyhawks relay of Stockwell, Karuzis, Nelson and Koser posted a time of 3:42.29 for 19th place, bettering the previous school record of 3:43.15 at the 2022 NEISDA Championships. Stonehill's second entry finished 20th in 3:46.51.

Other records that fell over the course of the weekend were Barry in the 200-yard individual medley relay on Friday morning, with a time of 2:13.11. Stonehill's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stockwell, Belanger, Hepburn and Nelson finished 20th on Friday night in a school-record 1:41.98 to finish 20th.

Stonehill finished the ECAC Championships in 10th place in the team standings with a score of 182 points. The Skyhawks finished fifth among the Northeast Conference programs competing at the event, which was won by Columbia University with 2,019 points, while the University of Maryland-Baltimore Country was second with 1,045 points. NEC member Wagner College finished third with 998 points.

  • Sokolova placed 31st in the 200-yard backstroke prelims this morning in 2:12.06, while Gobora was 32nd in 2:12.14 and Barry 35th in 2:12.69.
  • Lundell and Keating placed 33rd and 34th out of 41 competitors in the 200-yard butterfly prelims. Lundell posted a time of 2:20.73, while Keating clocked in at 2:21.31
  • Conley placed 36th in the 200-yard breaststroke prelims in 2:38.20, while Belanger was 38th in 2:39.62.
  • Nelson placed 54th out of 95 entries in the 100-yard freestyle prelims in 56.14-seconds, while Karuzis was 58th in 56.28 to lead seven Skyhawks in the event.

Stonehill is now off for the holiday season and will return to action in mid-January, when it visits Saint Peter's University for a dual meet on Saturday, January 14, at 1 p.m.
