Women's Swimming Has Three Qualify for Saturday Finals at ECAC Winter Championships

Stockwell qualifies for 100-yard backstroke B-final, while Hepburn and Belanger qualify for 100 breaststroke C-final

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (December 3, 2022) – Stonehill College placed three individuals in Saturday night finals to highlight the first two days of the 2022 ECAC Winter Championships at Nassau County Aquatic Center.

Saturday night final results were not posted late into the evening on Saturday, so check back to updates with Sunday's recap.

Stonehill saw three school records fall over the first two days of the Championships. Junior captain Sydney Stockwell broke her own mark in the 100-yard backstroke with her prelim time Saturday morning to qualify for the B-final in 58.02-seconds, placing 14th out of 80 entries in the event.

Freshman Kristy Barry broke the school mark in the 200-yard individual medley relay on Friday morning, placing 39th out of 82 entries in 2:13.11 to lead eight Skyhawk entries in the event.

Stonehill's 200-yard freestyle relay team set the third record on Friday night with a time of 1:41.98 to finish 20th as the Skyhawks placed two relays in the top 25 for the event. Stockwell swam the opening leg in 25.29-seconds, followed by freshman Taylor Belanger with a 25.15-second split, before sophomore Jami Hepburn completed the third leg in 25.75-seconds and then freshman Isabel Nelson swam the anchor in 25.79.

  • Hepburn and Belanger both qualified for the C-final of the 100-yard breaststroke. Hepburn qualified 19th out of 58 entries in Saturday morning's prelims in 1:07.22, while Belanger placed 24th in 1:07.92. Junior Morgan Gangi placed 34th in the prelims in 1:10.92, while sophomore Sharlotte Lundell placed 36th in 1:11.25.

    Stonehill's B-relay placed 16th out of 29 entries in the 400-yard medley relay to highlight the first day on Friday night with a time of 4:00.81 – edging the Skyhawks A-relay in 17th by 0.74-seconds. Barry swam the opening backstroke leg in 1:00.36, followed by Hepburn with a 1:05.61 breaststroke leg and junior Katie Keating with a 1:00.27 butterfly split, before Karuzis pulled the B-relay ahead of their teammates with a 56.20 freestyle leg on the anchor – nearly two seconds faster than the A-relay anchor.
    • Stockwell swam the lead backstroke leg for the A-relay in 59.57-seconds, followed by Belanger with a 1:05.60 breaststroke leg, and then Lundell with a 1:00.18 butterfly leg, before Nelson completed the freestyle anchor in 56.20-seconds.
  • The Skyhawks B-relay in the 200-yard freestyle relay of sophomores Sofiya Gobora and Julie Mastroianni, along with freshmen Mazy Karuzis and Emily Murphy finished 24th in 1:44.65.

Saturday Prelims

  • Barry was the second alternate for the finals in the 400-yard individual medley relay after placing 26th out of 37 entries in 4:47.41.
  • Stockwell placed 30th out of 81 entries in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.88-seconds – just 0.69-seconds off the pace to reach the C-final. Lundell placed 39th in 1:00.70.
  • Gobora placed 30th in the prelims of the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.16, while Barry was 32nd in 1:00.43 and Karuzis 33rd in 1:00.55.

  • Barry set a school-record for the 200-yard IM on Friday morning.
    Senior Nika Sokolova placed 39th out of 85 entries in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.66. Freshman Azia Lynn Koser finished 53rd in 2:04.44.

Friday Prelims

  • Stockwell placed 41st out of 82 entries in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.25, while Sokolova finished 53rd in 2:17.23.
  • Belanger placed 58th out of 137 entries in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.82-seconds, while Nelson finished 62nd in 25.87.
  • Koser placed 47th out of 62 entries in the 500-yard freestyle with her time of 5:33.95.

Stonehill will wrap up its weekend on Long Island tomorrow when it competes at the final day of the ECAC Winter Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center with prelims starting at 9 a.m., and finals getting underway at 4 p.m.
