Stonehill Takes Down Mt. Holyoke In Non-Conference Action

Belanger continued her strong start to the season with two individual first place finishes Saturday.

SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. (October 29, 2022)- The Stonehill College women's swim team traveled to Mt. Holyoke College for a non-conference swim meet and ended up topping the Lyons by a score of 176-112. The 176 points marked a new season-high for the Skyhawks on the young season.

Highlights

  • Stonehill's top 400-yard medley relay team of Kristy BarryTaylor BelangerSharlotte Lundell, and Mazy Karuzis took home first place with a time of 4:15.06. The Skyhawks other top relay team in the 400-yard freestyle (Jami HepburnIsabel NelsonSydney Stockwell, and Sofiya Gobora) also finished in first with a time of 3:51.74.
  • Individually, Stockwell led the squad with three first-place finishes in the following races: 50-yard backstroke (28.27), 100-yard backstroke(1:00.0), and 50-yard butterfly (27.38).
  • Stonehill's other multi-first place finisher on the day was Belanger as she took the top spot in both the 50-yard breaststroke (31.68) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.41).

  • Along with being part of Stonehill's first-place 400-yard medley relay team, Barry had a strong day in her individual events as she notched three top-three finishes including the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.20). Her other top-three finishes came in the 1000-yard freestyle: 12:33.69 (third) and 100-yard backstroke (1:05.51-third).
  • One of Stonehill's other many first-place swimmers on the day included Azia Koser who earned the Skyhawks second first-place finish on the day with a time of 11:34.16 in the 1000-yard freestyle race. She also took home first in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:46.33. In her other individual race on the day, she placed within the top five (fifth) for the 100-yard freestyle at 1:00.34.
  • Nelson also had an individual first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.26. Nelson also continued her strong day with top-five finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (26.65) and 50-yard butterfly (29.95). 
  • Nika Sokolova was Stonehill's sixth first-place individual finisher on the day as she swam to first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:07.24. Sokolova capped off her day with two top-five finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.03-second) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:04.69-fourth). 
  • Hepburn had a great day in the pool for the squad as she notched three top-five individual finishes. First, in the 50-yard breaststroke, she finished right behind Belanger with a time of 31.93). Later, she came in third in the 50-yard freestyle at 27:01 and then wrapped up her day with a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:12.04.
  • Morgan Gangi collected two top-three finishes overall in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.05-second) and 50-yard breaststroke (33.98). In the 50-yard breaststroke, she along with Belanger and Hepburn took the top three spots from the Lyons in that race.
  • Lundell continued her strong day as she had two individual top-three finishes to go along with her first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. In the 100-yard butterfly, she grabbed second place with a time of 1:02.87, and then in the 200-yard individual medley, she was right behind Barry in second with a time of 2:23.72.
  • Sofiya Gobora was another Skyhawk who had multiple top-three finishes on the day. Gobora finished third in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:05.69 and then in the 200-yard individual medley, she helped Stonehill take the top three spots in that race as well with a third-place finish at 2:24.40.
