Stonehill Sweeps Saint Michael’s, 9-0

Skyhawks extend NE-10 dual match winning streak to 17 with victory

COLCHESTER, Vt. (March 27, 2010) – Stonehill College ran its Northeast-10 dual match winning streak to 17 matches with a 9-0 sweep of Saint Michael’s College in the Tarrant Recreation Center this afternoon.

All six Stonehill players in the lineup were double-winners on the afternoon, led by senior Michael Mashkevich (Goleta, Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) and junior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), the reigning NE-10 Player of the Year. The tandem posted an 8-4 win at first doubles, before Fayed notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles and Mashkevich won 6-1, 6-0 at second singles. Sophomore Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) didn’t drop a game in posting a straight-sets win at sixth singles after teaming up with freshman Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) for an 8-5 win at third doubles.

Martin also posted a straight-sets win at fifth singles, as did senior Michael Leone (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and sophomore Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) at third and fourth singles, respectively. Leone and Burke also paired up to win at second doubles.

Stonehill (6-4, 3-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Merrimack College in a key NE-10 matchup at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m. Saint Michael’s (1-2, 1-2 NE-10) visits Bentley University tomorrow at 2 p.m.
