Skyhawks set to open defense of NE-10 title winners of five-straight
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 16, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, closed out the regular season with a 9-0 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference men’s tennis action this afternoon.
Stonehill saw all six in its lineup earn both singles and doubles wins. Senior Michael Mashkevich (Goleta, Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) closed out an unbeaten regular season (11-0) in NE-10 play with his 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles. He and junior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), the seventh-ranked doubles pairing in the East Region, combined for an 8-3 decision at first doubles. Fayed, the reigning NE-10 Player of the Year and ranked 13th in the East Region, picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles.
Senior Mike Leone (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) didn’t drop a game in his straight-sets win at third singles. Sophomore Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) also closed out a perfect regular season in NE-10 play (11-0) with an 8-4 pro-set win at fifth singles.
Stonehill (12-6, 9-2 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday as it opens defense of its Northeast-10 Tournament title when it hosts a quarterfinal round matchup. Opponent and match time will be announced over the weekend. Saint Anselm (5-6, 5-6 NE-10) has clinched a postseason berth and awaits its final seeding based on results of remaining matches in the NE-10 this weekend. The Hawks could be headed to Stonehill for Tuesday’s quarterfinal as the sixth seed.
