Skyhawks open NE-10 title defense with quarterfinal win

EASTON, Mass. (April 20, 2010) – Third-seeded Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, opened defense of its Northeast-10 Tournament championship with a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Pace University in quarterfinal round action of the 2010 NE-10 Men's Tennis Championships at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Stonehill (12-6, 9-2 NE-10) advances to Thursday's semifinal round where it will face second-seeded Merrimack College (12-4, 10-1 NE-10) at North Andover High School at 2 p.m. The Warriors advanced with a 5-0 win over seventh-seeded Saint Anselm College in a quarterfinal match today. Stonehill will host both the men's and women's NE-10 Championship matches on Sunday at Charles Watt Courts with the men's match at noon and the women's match to follow at 3:30 p.m. Pace sees its season come to a close at 5-7 overall, 5-6 in NE-10 play.

Sophomore Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) and freshman Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) led the double-winners for Stonehill as it posted its sixth-straight win – all without dropping a point. Burke closed the match out with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pace senior Jose Caceres (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./La Marud) at fourth singles after teaming up with senior Mike Leone (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) for an 8-4 win at second doubles.

Martin didn't drop a game in his straight-sets win over Pace senior Matthew Schaefer (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) at sixth singles. Martin and sophomore Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) combined for an 8-3 win at third doubles.

Senior Michael Mashkevich (Goleta, Calif./Framingham) and junior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), the seventh-ranked doubles team in the East Region, also picked up a point for the Skyhawks with an 8-3 win at first doubles.
