Latham's goal and assist lifts Skyhawks to Senior Day win over Queens, 2-1

EASTON, Mass. (October 30, 2022) – Freshman Sarah Latham scored the gamewinning goal with 57-seconds to play, and added an assist, to lift Stonehill College to a 2-1 Senior Day victory over Queens University of Charlotte to cap its inaugural Division I season on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

  • Latham had a hand in both Stonehill goals on the day, with her first collegiate goal providing the gamewinner with 57-seconds to play.
  • Freshman Makayla Strickulis also scored a goal for Stonehill.
  • Sophomore Shannon Conte finished with one stop in goal for Stonehill, while the Skyhawks also got defensive saves from senior Catherine Connors and sophomore Maddie House.
  • Freshman Fay Van de Roer scored a goal for Queens.
  • Freshman Hannah Neyssen finished with ten stops in the Royals cage.
  • Stonehill honored its six seniors playing their final collegiate game this afternoon: Connors, captain Andrea Caradonna, Madison Halstead, Emma Keene-Reinhard, Madi Weber and Calli West for their contributions to the program over their four-year career.

    Strickulis gave Stonehill the lead with just 57-seconds left in the first quarter when she knocked in a cross from the right side by Latham from in front of the goal for her fourth goal of the year.
  • Van de Roer knotted the score with 1:28 remaining in the first half when she tipped in a ball from the left side of the circle from sophomore Isabel Buijse for her second career goal.
  • Stonehill's defense held Queens to just two shots in the second half, including none in the final quarter.
  • The Skyhawks secured the win when a scrum out in front of the Queens cage saw the ball fall to the stick of Latham, who poked the ball into the open net with 57-seconds to play, making her first collegiate goal the winner in the final game of the season.

Noteworthy

  • Conte finished her sophomore season with 163 saves, breaking Stonehill's single-season record of 154 by Jamie Sisko, '98 during the program's second varsity season in 1997 – having surpassed the mark at Fairfield University on Friday with her career-high 18 save performance.
  • House finished the season with a team-high two defensive saves this season, including her stop in the third quarter today.
  • Latham finished her freshman season with four points with her goal and two assists this fall.
  • Two of Stonehill's three gamewinning goals this fall came off the stick of freshmen Strickulis and Latham, with Strickulis also converting the deciding shootout goal in the win over Merrimack College as well.
  • Queens was playing its 12th-straight road game this afternoon, also falling to Bryant University, 2-1 on Saturday in double-overtime.

Stonehill sees its inaugural NCAA Division I season come to a close with a 3-12 record overall, including 1-6 in its first Northeast Conference (NEC) schedule. Queens (0-14) will close out its first Division I season by hosting Limestone University next Saturday, November 5, at noon.
