Field Hockey Loses Close Battle Against Sacred Heart, 4-2

EASTON, MASS. (October 21, 2022) – Sacred Heart University scored three goals in the second half to secure a tough 4-2 decision over Stonehill College in Northeast Conference (NEC) field hockey action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Stonehill sophomore Shannon Conte played another competitive game defending the goal, with a total of 13 saves during her playtime, one short of her career high. 
  • Junior All-American Raegan Hickey scored the first goal for the Skyhawks in the second quarter with a penalty stroke after Sacred Heart had grabbed the lead.
  • The Pioneers answered back with two goals by sophomore Aine Keaney and sophomore Mira Poelzer in the third quarter.
  • Senior Andrea Caradonna added her second goal of the season to pull Stonehill back within a goal early in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner.
  • SHU sealed the game with the fourth and final goal from senior Mikayla VanHorn.

  • The game was scoreless until the second quarter when Claire Skumurski scored the first goal for the Pioneers on a rebound with 4:34 left in the half.
  • Stonehill returned with Hickey's fifth goal of the season on a penalty stroke to knot the score before halftime just two minutes later.
  • Keaney restored the Sacred Heart lead 10:46 into the second half and then Poelzer fired a shot from the upper right side of the arc to extend the Pioneer's lead to two goals with 1:01 remaining in the third.
  • Stonehill drew back within a goal when Caradonna scored off a penalty corner, assisted by junior Claudia Crowe and Maddie House 51-seconds into the fourth.
  • SHU sealed the win against the run of play in the fourth quarter as VanHorn poked in a deflected pass from Abby Lauer with 5:38 to play.

Stonehill (2-10, 1-4 NEC) returns to action traveling to Saint Francis (Pa.) University this Sunday for a noon match-up.  Stonehill's next home game is on Sunday, October 30th against Queens University (N.C.) where the Skyhawks will be playing their Senior Day game at 1 p.m. on W.B. Mason Field.
