#20 Stonehill Fourth at Kutztown DII Challenge

Alves leads Skyhawks again with 14th-place finish overall

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 23, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked 20th in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II national poll and first in the East Region, placed fourth out of nine teams at the Kutztown University Division II Challenge in women's cross country action today.

Stonehill finished with 101 points in the team standings, placing first among East Regional teams at the event. No. 3-ranked Shippensburg University took the team title with 20 points, while 19th-ranked and host Kutztown was second with 72, followed by third place and No. 14 Millersville University with 86. Shippensburg junior Neely Spence won the individual title with her time of 20:57 over the six-kilometer course.

Junior captain Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) led the way again for Stonehill with her time of 23:22 to place 14th (out of 110 runners overall), first among East Region runners. Sophomore Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) finished 22nd overall in 23:58, while classmate Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) took 24th in 24:04. Freshman Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) was close behind in 25th in 24:07 – second among freshmen at the event.

Stonehill has next weekend off before it hosts the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Sunday, November 7, at 10 a.m. The Skyhawks will be looking to defend its NE-10 Championship and win its ninth title overall.
