#25 Stonehill Captures Second-Straight NE-10 Championship

EASTON, Mass. (November 7, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked 25th in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II national poll and first in the East Region, won its second-straight Northeast-10 Conference women's cross country championship and ninth in program history overall with its winning performance on its home course this morning.

Stonehill placed two runners in the top ten and six in the top 20 as the Skyhawks won the team crown with 56 points, followed by runners-up University of Massachusetts Lowell (97 points), The College of Saint Rose in third (119), fourth place Bentley University (124) and fifth place Southern Connecticut State University (128). American International College sophomore Jeptui Cherutich (Springfield, Mass./Maji Mazuri Girl's) won the individual title by completing the five-kilometer course in 18:02.3.

Junior co-captain Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) led Stonehill, which saw six runners earn All-Conference honors, with a second-place finish overall in 18:26.2 to earn first team All-NE-10 honors for the third-straight year after placing fourth each of her first two seasons with the Skyhawks at the event. Classmate Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) earned All-Conference honors for the first time in her career with her seventh-place finish overall in 18:49.3 to also earn a spot on the first team.

Sophomore Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) placed 12th overall in 19:05.8 for a second-team All-Conference performance, the first of her career. Junior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) and freshmen Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman Hanson) turned in All-Conference performances for the first time for Stonehill with third team finishes. Ferrarini placed 17th overall in 19:13.1, followed closely by Bishop in 18th in 19:14.3 and Regan in 19th with her time of 19:16.3. Senior co-captain Lindsay Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) finished just outside of the All-Conference spots with her time of 19:18.8 for a 22nd place finish to round out the Skyhawks scoring runners.

Stonehill, which won its ninth NE-10 Championship in program history today, has also won titles in 2000-2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Stonehill is back in action in two weeks when it looks to defend its NCAA Division II East Regional crown on Sunday, November 21, at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Mass. The Skyhawks will be seeking their ninth East Regional championship in two weeks.
