#21 Stonehill Finishes Fourth at UMD Shriners' Cross Country Invitational

Veit leads Skyhawks with 16th place finish in 42-team event

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 19, 2009) - The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 21st in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II preseason poll, placed fourth for the second-straight week at today's University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Shriners' Invitational.

Stonehill posted a 158 team score with two runners finishing in the top 20. Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the 42-team event with a score of 60, while Brandeis University was second (75) and Keene State College third (115). The Skyhawks were first of seven Division II programs at the event.

Freshman Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) led Stonehill with a 16th-place finish (out of 301 runners) as she completed the 5K course in 18:47. MIT senior Jacqui Wentz (Santa Rosa, Calif./Maria Carillo) took first place with a time of 17:40.

Sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) finished 19th in 18:50 for Stonehill. Freshman Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) placed 31st in 19:12.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, September 26, when it participates in the University of Southern Indiana Pre-National Invitational, in Evansville, Ind., at the site of the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships in November.
