SMITHFIELD, R.I. (September 4, 2009) - The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 22nd in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II preseason poll and first in the East Region, opened its 2009 season at the Bryant University Invitational this afternoon. No team scores were counted in the non-scoring event.

Sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) posted the top time for Stonehill as she completed the 5K course with a time of 20:16.95 to take 11th place overall. University of Connecticut's Courtney Dinnan won the event, which featured 88 runners from ten teams, with a time of 19:06.97.

Freshman Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) posted a time of 20:28.33 to place 17th overall in her collegiate debut. Classmates Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) and Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) finished back-to-back in 25th and 26th place with times of 20:56.13 and 20:56.59, respectively, in their first collegiate competition.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, September 12, when it participates in the Trinity College Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn.
