Skyhawks earn spot in DII Nationals in Evansville, Ind., in two weeks

BOSTON, Mass. (November 8, 2009) - The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 22nd in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll will get the chance to compete for a national championship after capturing the NCAA Division II East Regional, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, at Franklin Park today. Freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) captured the individual title as she set the pace for the field of 178 runners with a time of 22:16.5 over the 6-kilometer course.

Stonehill will compete at the NCAA Division II Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana, in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday, November 21. The Skyhawks will be joined by the 9th-ranked Stonehill men who took second to punch its ticket to the nationals.

Carmone led three All-Region performances for Stonehill with her regional championship performance. Sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hansen) finished eighth overall with a time of 23:18.2, followed closely by freshman Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) in ninth with a time of 23:18.9.

Freshmen Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) helped Stonehill to the team title with a 16th-place finish in 23:38.4, with classmate Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) taking 17th in 23:39.6.

UMass Lowell also earned a spot at the Division II Nationals with its second-place finish, while Adelphi University rounded out the top three. The Northeast-10 Conference took each of the top four positions in the regional and seven of the top eight.
