Stonehill Opens Up Outdoor Season At UConn Spring Invitational

Curit takes first place in 400 meter run, Olin breaks school record in pole vault

STORRS, Conn. (March 31, 2012) – Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) captured first place in the 400 meter run and sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) broke her previous school record mark in the pole vault to open the 2012 outdoor season for the Stonehill College women's track and field team at the UConn Spring Invitational, hosted by the University of Connectictut.

Curit finished in first place out of 15 competitors in the 400 meter run with a time of 59.21 seconds. The freshman was the only runner to break the one minute barrier at the invitational.

Olin placed fifth overall in the pole vault clearing 9-feet and 6.25-inches to better her previous mark of 9-feet and 6-inches set at the Bryant Invitational on April 2, 2011.

In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) placed fourth overall with a time of 1:07.61 out of 14 competitors. Junior Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) ran a time of 1:12.08 for ninth place overall in the event.

Burke and Polakowski also competed in the 100-meter hurdles along with teammate and junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood). Burke posted the top-finish with a time of 16.88 seconds for eighth place overall while Bernazzani ranked ninth overall (16.91) and Polakowski tenth (17.00).

Sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) placed fifth overall in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 35-feet and 6.50-inches. Comei previous best in the event was 34-feet and 8.25-inches set at the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Outdoor Championships on May 7, 2011.

In the 4x400 meter relay, Curit teamed up with freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield), classmate Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) for a fourth place finish in 4:08.50

Other Stonehill Highlights Included:

Carrier and Wilson placed eighth and ninth overall, respectively, in the 800 meter run with times of 2:20.74 and 2:21.32. Rielly finished 12th overall in the event in 2:24.33 while sophomore Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) posted a time of 2:30.07 (22nd overall).

Seven members of Stonehill's distance squad competed in the 1,500 meter run with freshman Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) highlighting the group's effort. Anderson placed 11th overall in a time of 4:50.24 while senior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) finished in 15th place (4:56.05) and sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) ranked 20th overall in a time of 4:59.89. Freshman Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) also broke five minutes in the event with a 21st place finish overall (4:59.95).

In the 4x100 meter relay, Bernazzani, freshman Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop), Comei and sophomore Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) combined to run a time of 52.04 placing eighth overall in the event.

Stonehill returns to action on Saturday when it participates in the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
