Skyhawks Break Two School Records On Day One At New England Championships

Wilson advances to 800 meter finals with school record performance

BOSTON, Mass. (February 24, 2012) – Freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) both broke school records to highlight the Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team's efforts at the New England Championships, hosted by Boston University (BU), at the BU Track and Tennis Center on Friday evening.

Wilson improved her NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the 800 meter trials by breaking her school record in the event with a time of 2:15.45 which ranks third going into tomorrow's finals. Senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) also ran in the 800 meters posting a time of 2:16.73. The top-ten times advance to the 800 meter finals.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Bernazzani earned the last qualifying spot with her 16th ranked performance in the trials in 9.21 seconds. Bernazzani trimmed down her previous record of 9.26 seconds which was set on February 10, 2012 at the same facility. Bernazzani will compete in the 60 meter hurdles semifinals at 12:15 p.m. tomorrow. Sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) recorded a time of 9.33 finishing 19th overall in the trial run.

Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) competed in two events recording a leap of 16-feet and 10.50-inches in the long jump to finish 11th overall in the trials (top-nine distances advance to the finals) and a time of 57.78 in the 400 meters for 12th place in the trials (top-ten times advance to the finals).

Freshman Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) ranked 17th in the 1,000 meter trials (top-ten advance to the finals) running a time of 2:59.96.

Four Skyhawks competed in the 5,000 meter run all finishing inside the top-25 in the event.

Junior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) led the quartet in 17:53.00, ranking 11th overall, while senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished in 18:13.54 (14th overall). Sophomore Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) posted a time of 18:26.56 (18th overall) and freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) recorded a time of 18:50.31 for a 24th place finish.

Stonehill's distance medley relay consisting of junior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic), freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and freshman Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) finished ninth overall in the event with a time of 12:14.69. Veit ran the opening 1,200-meter leg in 3:42, Hanlon posted a split of 60.3 seconds in the 400-meter second leg, LaRegina ran a time of 2:19.4 in the 800-meter third leg and Brianna Venturo recorded a time of 5:11.7 in the 1,600-meter anchor leg.

Day two of the New England Championships at the BU Track and Tennis Center, hosted by BU, begins tomorrow at 10:00 am.
