Stonehill Places Tenth Overall At The New Balance Boston Collegiate Indoor Games

Curit, Ferrarini and Wilson post strong performances at the Reggie Lewis Center

BOSTON, Mass. (January 27, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team placed tenth overall at the New Balance Boston Collegiate Indoor Games hosted by Northeastern University at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday night.

Brown University won the meet scoring 118.33 points while Northeastern finished second (112.83) and Vermont placed third overall (83). Stonehill earned 21 points for tenth place out of 14 teams in the meet.

Senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) turned in an impressive double for the Skyhawks running to a sixth place finish in the one mile run while anchoring the distance medley relay team alongside teammates Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and Christen Carrier (Manchester, Conn./Manchester Central) to a fourth place finish overall in 12:31.40.

In the one mile run, Ferrarini ran a time of 5:08.61 and bounced back later in the meet with a 5:12 split in the 1,500 meter leg of the distance medley relay for Stonehill.

Freshman middle distance runner Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) posted the top individual performance for the Skyhawks finishing fifth overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.67, a new personal best, while falling just shy of the Division II Provisional Qualifying time (2:16.30). 

Alves, Carrier and Curit also placed well in their respective individual events as Curit established a new long jump record, indoors, finishing fifth overall with a leap of 17-feet and 6.25-inches to highlight the group. Carrier finished sixth overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.09 while Alves placed ninth in the one mile run in 5:14.94.

Sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) claimed eighth place in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.68 seconds after qualifying for the event with a preliminary time of 8.63. In the 4x400 meter relay, Polakowski helped Stonehill finish eighth overall with teammates Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) and Erin Reilly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) compiling a time of 4:12.54.

Other Stonehill highlights include:

Senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished tenth overall in the 3,000 meter run in 10:21.94.

Reilly placed 11th overall in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:06.12.

Senior Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) finished 13th overall in the triple jump with a mark of 34-feet and 2.25-inches and sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) placed 14th overall with a leap of 33-feet and 6.75-inches.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday, February 3 at the Tufts University Pentathlon at 5 p.m. The Skyhawks will also be competing on Saturday, February 4 at the Tufts University Stampede at 11:00 a.m. and the Charley Torpey Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island at noon.
