Women's Swimming Finishes Third in Nine Team Virtual Meet

EASTON, Mass. (April 19, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's swimming program capped a three-part virtual meet among nine programs with a consistent third place finish overall, having posted that team result in all three weeks of the meet. The Skyhawks swam their portion of the event at its temporary home, the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton, Massachusetts, last week.

Stonehill finished with 622.5 points over the three sections of the virtual meet, which was won by Roger Williams University with 1,555.5 points. Babson College took second with 1,125.5 points. The Skyhawks finished ahead of Norwich University (327 points), with Albertus Magnus College rounded out the top five (239).

Freshman captain Sydney Stockwell finished second in the individual high point standings for the three-meet series, moving up from sixth after week two and finishing with 118.5 points. Babson's April Kupsky took high point honors with 169 points, while Stockwell edged Babson's Lindsay Nowak (117 points) and then three swimmers tied for fourth with 114 points.

Stockwell finished the virtual meet with three event wins over the course of the series, winning the 50-yard (28.94-seconds) and 100-yard (1:02.41) backstrokes, while adding a first place finish in the 50-yard butterfly (28.16-seconds). She scored in all seven of the individual events she competed in, posting three top three finishes and six top fives, while also swimming in five relays that all finished in the top five.

Stockwell just missed out on a sweep of her three backstroke events in the series, finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke this week, in 2:16.94. Sophomore Nika Sokolova and freshman Morgan Gangi followed Stockwell in fifth and sixth, respectively. Sokolova finished in 2:26.00, while Gangi clocked in at 2:29.00, giving the Skyhawks three in the top six out of 19 entries overall.

Freshman Katie Keating recorded second and third place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and freestyle. Her second place time in the butterfly was 2:18.86, while finishing third out of 19 entries in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.76. Stockwell rounded out the top five for the 200-freestyle in 2:10.46, with Sokolova sixth in 2:12.71. Freshman Maddie Conley gave the Skyhawks four in the top ten of the 200-free, with an eighth place finish in 2:13.56, while sophomore Maggie Timmoney was 11th in 2:24.96.

Stockwell rounded out her individual swims for the meet by finishing fourth in the 400-yard individual medley in 5:08.75, with Gangi ninth in 5:20.00.

Conley added a fourth place finish out of 19 entries in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:39.03, while Gangi finished seventh in 2:44.59. Conley and Keating took fifth and sixth respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle, while Sokolova placed eighth and Timmoney finished 11th. Conley posted a time of 11:56.91, with Keating clocking in at 12:12.59. Sokolova finished in 12:27.19, followed by Timmoney in 13:19.09.

Stonehill's 800-yard freestyle relay wrapped up a string of strong relay performances for the Skyhawks over the three meets, finishing fourth out of nine teams in 8:46.17. Sokolova swam the lead leg, followed by Stockwell and Conley, before Keating completed the anchor leg.

Stonehill posted a third place team finish for the third virtual meet with 251 points in week three. Roger Williams posted its third-straight team win with 431.5 points, followed by Babson in second for the third straight meet with 418 points. The Skyhawks finished ahead of Colby-Sawyer College (136.5 points) in fourth place, with Gordon College (69) rounding out the top five out of seven teams participating in the final week of the series.

Stonehill will round out its spring semester with a virtual championship meet April 30-May 2, swimming its portion at the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton.
