Women's Swimming Third in First Week of Virtual Meet

Stockwell posted a pair of first place finishes in the 50 fly and backstroke

EASTON, Mass. (March 19, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's swimming program, under the direction of head coach Caleb Potvin, made its debut in intercollegiate competition, in a virtual manner, posting a third place team finish in the opening week of the three-round series.

Stonehill compiled 168 points over 14 events while swimming its portion of the event at its temporary home, the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Roger Williams University leads the nine team standings with 521 points, followed by Babson College in second with 259. Norwich University (128 points) and Albertus Magnus College (83) round out the top five with Stonehill.

Freshman captain Sydney Stockwell led eight top ten finishes for Stonehill in the first week, including six in the top five, with a pair of first place performances. She was first out of 35 entries in the 50-yard butterfly in 28.16-seconds, while taking first of 38 entries in the 50-yard backstroke in 28.94-seconds.

Freshman Katie Keating also finished in the top ten in the 50-yard butterfly with a sixth-place finish in 28.55-seconds, while sophomore Nika Sokolova turned in a top ten finish in the 50-yard backstroke, placing seventh in 31.59-seconds. Freshman Morgan Gangi placed 13th in the 50-back in 32.19, while sophomore Maggie Timmoney rounded out the four Skyhawks in the event in 36.69-seconds for 21st place.

Gangi and freshman Maddie Conley both finished in the top five of the 50-yard breaststroke. Gangi was fourth in 34.49-seconds, while Conley was fifth in 34.67.

Stonehill also collected top five finishes in a pair of relay events. The Skyhawks took third out of 13 teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:59.82. Conley completed the opening leg in 1:01.82, followed by Sokolova with a 1:00.90 split in the second leg, before Keating swam the third leg in 57.71 and then Stockwell took the anchor leg in 59.39.

Stonehill's 200-yard medley relay finished fifth out of 12 teams in 2:01.35. Stockwell finished the lead backstroke leg in 30.56-seconds, followed by Gangi with a 34.82-second leg in the breaststroke and then Keating completed the butterfly leg in 28.39-second before Sokolova swam the freestyle anchor in 27.58-seconds.

Keating took 13th out of 50 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.19-seconds, while Sokolova was 21st in 28.09, while Conley took 22nd in 28.50. Timmoney followed in 29.98-seconds for 29th. Gangi placed 13th in the 100-yard individual medley relay in 1:09.16, while Conley finished 15th in the field of 42 swimmers in 1:10.10.

Stonehill will compete in the second round of the three-part virtual series at the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton on Saturday, March 27.
