Northborough, Mass., junior leads Skyhawks to pair of wins
EASTON, Mass. (April 8, 2014) – Stonehill College junior goalkeeper Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for women's lacrosse for the second straight week by the league office this afternoon.
Armstrong led Stonehill to a 2-0 week as she posted a 5.50 goals against average and .676 save percentage with 11.5 saves per game while playing all 120 minutes in the goal, chipping in with two ground balls and a caused turnover. She made seven of her ten saves in the second half to preserve as 7-6 triumph over No. 4-ranked Le Moyne College on Saturday, including a pair of stops in the final minute to protect the one goal lead. Armstrong also made 13 stops, including eight in the second half, in Wednesday's 17-5 victory over Southern New Hampshire University. She made seven saves on 13 free-position shot attempts for the week, four of which came in Saturday's win over Le Moyne – including three in the second half and one with 1:02 remaining in regulation. It marked Le Moyne's lowest goal output since joining the NE-10 (42 games) and the first time in Dolphins history they have lost a game (105 previous wins) when yielding seven goals or less.
Armstrong has played all but two minutes and 20-seconds in the Stonehill goal this season and has posted a 9.45 goals against average (6th NE-10) and .492 save percentage (3rd) while averaging 9.2 saves per game (3rd) in 603:03 (2nd) over ten starts. She also ranks 14th nationally for save percentage, 16th nationally for saves per game, 17th for total saves and 25th in goals against average. Armstrong has recorded three-straight double figure save performances, four in the last five games, and five total this season, also chipping in with 11 ground balls and three caused turnovers for the season.
Armstrong has started 39 of the 43 games she has played over her three seasons at Stonehill. She has posted a 10.33 goals against average and .445 save percentage with 326 saves and a 26-14 record. She currently ranks fifth all-time in program history for career saves, while her 131 saves in 2013 is the sixth-highest single-season total in program history, and her 103 stops in 2012 ranks tenth. Armstrong has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll three semesters and Athletic Director's Honor Roll once, earning a spot on the NE-10 All-Championship team during the 2012 tournament. She recorded a career-high 16 saves at Rollins College in 2012.
Stonehill (6-4, 5-2 NE-10), ranked 14th in the Lacrosse Magazine Division II poll and 15th in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, is back in action tonight when it visits rival Bentley University for a Northeast-10 matchup at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home to W.B. Mason Stadium tomorrow night to host Southern Connecticut State University at 7 p.m.
