Vetter nets four goals and Rudden posts five points to lead Skyhawks
DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 12, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked 7th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, bounced back from an opening night setback for a 17-10 victory over Tiffin University in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Northeast Regional Park tonight.
Junior Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) matched her career high with five points on two goals and three assists, while freshman Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) netted a season-high four goals to lead Stonehill to the bounce back win. Vetter also collected a team-high four draw controls with a ground ball and caused turnover. Sophomore Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) added a career-high four points with a career-best three goals and an assist with three draws and a ground ball. Junior Lizzie Lane (Sandwich, Mass./Bishop Stang) contributed two goals for Stonehill with two draws and a ground ball, while junior Keri Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) registered a goal and assist for three points.
Sophomore Emily Roussel (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) led Tiffin with four goals and an assist for five points, collecting seven draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Alexis MacMillan (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) posted three goals and an assist for four points, while freshman Gina Abulone (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) recorded a goal and two assists. Sophomore Katelyn Hill (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) chipped in a pair of goals, five draws and two ground balls.

Junior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) finished with four saves in goal for Stonehill, which finished with a 35-18 advantage in shots for the contest. Junior Jessica Bombard (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) posted 13 stops in the Tiffin goal. The Dragons posted a 17-12 edge in draw controls, while the Skyhawks converted 3-of-6 free-position shots and Tiffin was 3-for-7.
Stonehill scored the first five goals of the contest, with the first two coming from Vetter off feeds from Rudden, over the opening ten minutes on its way to an 11-5 halftime lead. Tiffin scored four of the next six goals to draw back within three (7-4) with Abulone posting a goal and two assists during that eight minute stretch. The Skyhawks closed out the half with a 4-1 run to take the 11-5 halftime lead, capped by a Rudden marker with 50-seconds remaining as four different players scored over that run.
Lane opened the second half scoring to extend the Stonehill lead to 12-5 four and a half minutes in. After a free-position goal by Roussel with 21:10 remaining, the Skyhawks scored the next three goals to open a nine goal lead (15-6) after Vetter's four marker of the night with 13:06 on the clock. Tiffin closed the gap to five (15-10) with a four goal run, including a pair from Hill, with 5:36 left, but Matheson scored the last two goals of the night for Stonehill to seal the win from there.
Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it closes out its three game spring break trip at 10th-ranked Florida Southern College at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, against Assumption College for their Northeast-10 Conference opener at 7 p.m. Tiffin (0-4, 0-0 GLIAC) heads back north to host Mercyhurst College on Friday at noon.
