McGill nets season-high four goals, Shannahan posts six points for Skyhawks
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 27, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked 14th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, strung together a second straight win for the first time this season with a commanding 14-5 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Ronald J. Abdow Field this afternoon.
Junior Cassandra McGill (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) scored a season-high four goals and senior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) produced a season-high six points with a goal and a season-best five assists to lead Stonehill to its second straight win over the last three days. McGill added three draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover to her four goal day, while Shannahan extended her point streak to 32 games dating back to 2011 and chipped in four draws, three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Junior Mikayla Couch (Towaco, N.J./DePaul Catholic) contributed two goals and an assist for three points with three ground balls, while sophomore Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) netted two goals. Senior Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) chipped with a goal and assist, while juniors Emily Kessel (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and Jillian Yung (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) as well as freshmen Shannon Booth (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) and Alex Fink (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) all netted a goal apiece.

Junior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted nine saves in the goal for Stonehill, which finished with a 31-21 advantage for shots in the contest. The Skyhawks also recorded a 14-5 edge in draw controls. Sophomore Lissy Doherty (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) finished with 11 stops in the American International goal, including six in the second half.
Senior Brittany Flynn (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) led American International with two goals and an assist for three points. Junior Whitney McKay (Painted Post, N.Y./West) added two goals, two ground balls, and a draw control and caused turnover, while freshman Jessica Lawler (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico Academy) dished out two assists. Freshman Abigail Cavallo (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) chipped in with a goal for the Yellow Jackets.
Stonehill reeled off eight straight goals to close out the first half with an 8-1 lead at halftime after McKay opened the scoring 46-seconds into the contest, assisted by Lawler, for an early American International lead. Couch sparked the Stonehill run with a goal, assisted by Shannahan, with 23:32 remaining in the half. Shannahan had a goal and four assists in the opening half for the Skyhawks, while McGill scored twice and Mahony had a goal and assist during the 8-0 run to close the half.
Matheson put Stonehill in front for good with her first goal of the game with 21:35 remaining in the half. Neither team scored for the next 11 minutes before the Skyhawks broke the game open with six markers over the final 10:22.
McGill extended the Stonehill run to 9-0 with her third marker of the day 1:11 into the second half for a 9-1 cushion. American International struck back with goals from Cavallo and McKay over the next two minutes. The two teams traded goals at 24:31 (by Fink) and 19:40 (from Flynn) before Stonehill scored three straight within a two minute span to seal the win (13-4) after Kessel's fourth goal of the year with 8:50 to play.
Stonehill (4-3, 3-1 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts No. 2 Adelphi University at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. American International (3-6, 0-6 NE-10) visits Bentley University next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
