Softball Splits Doubleheader at Brown in Mid-Week Matinee

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 17, 2024) – The Stonehill College Softball team won the first game before dropping the second of a non-conference doubleheader at Brown University Wednesday afternoon.

GAME 1 – Stonehill 1 (10-26, 2-13 NEC), Brown 0 (12-19, 5-7 Ivy)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) and Brown starter Macy Borowski went toe-to-toe to start the game as neither team could produce a hit in the first three innings.

Each team recorded a hit in the fourth as redshirt sophomore May Dawes (Beacon Falls, Conn.) tabbed the first Skyhawks single but the score remained scoreless through four innings.

After a single from freshman Haleigh Reed (Mesa, Ariz.), senior Maeve Proulx (Westford, Mass.) pinch-ran and would be a blur on the basepaths, scoring from first on an RBI double into the right-centerfield gap from junior Paige Wodarski (Danvers, Mass.).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Sullivan notched her first career complete-game shutout and her second career win. This is just the second shutout of the season for Stonehill, recording the first one just a week ago in a 10-0 win over Rhode Island.
  • Stonehill had another perfect day in the field as the Skyhawks have committed just two errors over the past six games, holding a 3-3 record over the stretch.
  • Dawes went 2-3 with two singles as she is now 9-19 over her last eight appearances while Reed and Wodarski each recorded one hit with Wodarski hitting her first double of the season.
  • Junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) had her on-base streak of eight games come to an end after an 0-3 performance at the plate. She is still hitting 11-20 over the past seven games.

GAME 2 - Brown 9 (13-19, 5-7 Ivy), Stonehill 1 (10-27, 2-13 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite going hitless in the first game of the day, Conte sent a ball flying over the left field fence in the first inning to put Stonehill up 1-0 in the first inning.

Brown tied the score in the bottom half of the first as Cameron Zytkewicz Ray singled with two outs to drive in Jasmine Hsiao from second base.

After a scoreless second, the Bears saw their first four batters reach base in the bottom of the third before a two-RBI single and a two-RBI double put Brown ahead, 6-1.

Another three runs came across in the bottom of the fourth, all on RBI singles as the Skyhawks went down 9-1 and dropped the second of the doubleheader in five innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Conte hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season as well as plating her 18th RBI of the year. She is now hitting a team-best .323 and has reached base safely in 17 of the last 20 games.
  • Freshman Alex Sciaretto (Bristol, Conn.) got the start for the Skyhawks, taking the loss and dropping to 1-4 on the season.
