Sacred Heart Secures Two NEC Wins Over Softball in Doubleheader

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 29, 2024) The Stonehill College Softball team began a three-game weekend series at Pioneer Park against Sacred Heart on Friday, dropping both games of the Northeast Conference doubleheader.

GAME 1 – Sacred Heart 8 (11-17, 5-1 NEC), Stonehill 0 (6-17, 1-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sacred Heart came out the gates firing in the bottom of the first as the Pioneers first nine batters reached base safely, catapulting them to a 6-0 lead.

A solo homer in the second and another in the third increased the Sacred Heart lead to 8-0 while the Stonehill bats never got going leading to a mercy rule in the fifth inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Freshman Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) made her seventh start of the season for the Skyhawks with her record on the year dropping to 2-6 with one save.
  • Senior Maeve Proulx (Westford, Mass.) went 1-2 to improve her season batting average to .278, the fourth-best on the team.
  • Sacred Heart starter Sam Kowalski went the full five innings on the mound, giving up two hits while striking out four.

GAME 2 – Sacred Heart 5 (12-17, 6-1 NEC), Stonehill 2 (6-18, 1-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the second inning, starting the inning off with three straight singles before a fielder's choice and an error led to three runs for the Pioneers.

An RBI single in the third and fourth added two more runs to the Sacred Heart lead as the Pioneers led 5-0 after four innings.

The Skyhawks scored their first run of the day on a throwing error by the Pioneers after back-to-back singles from freshman Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) and junior Emily Nardelli (North Attleboro, Mass.) put a runner in scoring position.

Nardelli tallied an RBI in the seventh inning on a ground out to shortstop but Stonehill fell 5-2 in the second matchup of the doubleheader.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) falls to 3-7 in the circle this year as she pitched the full six innings, marking her sixth complete game in 11 starts this season.
  • Emily Heath pitched all seven innings for the Pioneers giving up four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out three.
  • Junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) went hitless but drew a walk and has now reached base safely in six of the last seven games.
  • Junior Isabella Therrien (Auburn, Mass.) had a 2-3 day at the plate in the second game, her fourth multi-hit game of the season.
