Softball Drops Home Opener Against Siena

EASTON, Mass. (March 19, 2024) The Stonehill College softball team hosted Siena College at Father Gartland Field Tuesday afternoon, dropping the non-conference matchup, 10-1, in five innings.

Siena 10 (12-6, 0-0 MAAC), Stonehill 1 (4-11, 1-2 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints scored in the top half of the first frame as the leadoff hitter walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Madi Silber.

Junior Chloe Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached first after getting hit by a pitch and stole second, setting up freshman Haleigh Reed (Mesa, Ariz.) who lined a single up the middle to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

Junior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) pitched two scoreless innings in a row but Siena broke the tie in the fourth, notching four runs on five hits to take a 5-1 lead.

The Saints added to their lead in the top of the fifth, blasting two home runs, both with two outs in the inning to take a 10-1 advantage.

Siena closed out the fifth inning with a nine-run advantage as the Saints won the game in five innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Reed and junior Paige Wodarski (Danvers, Mass.) each went 1-2 at the plate. Reed is now hitting .270 on the year, a top-five average on the team while being third on the team with 10 hits.
  • The Skyhawks tallied their fifth perfect game in the field of the season, committing zero errors on the day. Stonehill's fielding percentage of .965 now ranks second in the Northeast Conference, trailing only Sacred Heart at .976.
  • Sophomore Natalie Bottiglieri (Massapequa, N.Y.) has reached base safely in four straight games and nine of the past 11 games. Despite going 0-2 today, Bottiglieri is hitting .302 on the season with a .388 on base percentage.

Stonehill softball is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader at Glay Field against Providence College beginning at 3 p.m.

Stonehill Softball also moved its three-game weekend series against Saint Francis at Fr. Gartland Field to Thursday and Friday this week due to inclement weather in the forecast. The Skyhawks and Red Flash will play at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday before playing a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
