O’Shea Gives Men’s Soccer a 3-1 Edge Against Le Moyne with Hat Trick

Junior James O'Shea records first-career hat trick

Chieffo tallied his first assist of his collegiate career

EASTON, Mass. (October 15, 2016) – The Stonehill men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory against Le Moyne College Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

For Stonehill (6-7-0, 4-5-0 NE-10) junior James O'Shea (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) tallied his first-career hat trick in the victory. Ryan Chieffo (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) and Connor O'Brien (Scenectady, N.Y./Guilderland Central) assisted in the second and third goals, respectively.

Le Moyne's (9-3-1, 6-3-0 NE-10) Salar Faryar scored the lone goal for the Dolphins, as Pablo Fernandez recorded the assist.

Early in the first half, Stonehill tallied an opening goal as O'Shea took a penalty kick at the 20th minute sending the ball past the goalkeeper, for a 1-0 advantage. Only about three minutes later, O'Shea found the back of the net once again. Chieffo sent a cross from about 40 yards out on the right side to O'Shea who was able to head the ball to the back right post opening up the game, 2-0.

The Skyhawks' defense was able to contain the Dolphins for the rest of the half, as Stonehill held a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Le Moyne continued to pressure Stonehill as their four shots on goal out did Stonehill's two in the second half. The Dolphin's Fernandez sent the ball from the left side to the top of the six yard box in the 64th minute, where Faryar was able to track the ball heading it over Stonehill's Conor McDonough's (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) hands cutting the lead to one, 2-1.

About one minute later, Stonehill would not let up. They responded quickly as O'Brien sent a long ball from midfield finding O'Shea at about the 18-yard box. O'Shea collected the ball, by beating out defenders putting it to the back left post putting the Skyhawks' lead to two, 3-1.

With only three more shots from Le Moyne, Stonehill was able to close out the game as McDonough picked up five saves in the afternoon.

Stonehill is back in action on Wednesday, October 19 when it travels to Merrimack College for a 7 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
