Sophomore Mesiti tallies lone goal for the Skyhawks

Nutt tallied the lone assist for the Skyhawks

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 27, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team fell to Assumption College, 5-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference game Tuesday night at Multi-Sport Stadium.

Stonehill's (3-5-0, 1-3-0 NE-10) lone goal came from sophomore Matthew Mesiti (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland Central) who was assisted by Keegan Nutt (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) early in the first half.

Assumption (4-4-0, 3-4-0 NE-10) had five separate goal scorers including Matt Gilson, Simon Trcka, Johnny Aviza, Jason Lages, and Madison Barnwell.

The Skyhawks came out with an early 1-0 lead as Nutt was able to get a shot off which hit the crossbar. Mesiti collected the ball at the top of the box and was able to shoot the ball past the goalkeeper at the 11th minute of the game.

The Greyhounds would not respond until 24 minutes later when Trcka sent a cross to Gilson to knot the game at one in the 26th minute. Stonehill played the ball in the offensive zone for some time before Assumption was able to get the ball out to Trcka for a long shot from 25 yards slipping under the crossbar for the 2-1 lead. Both teams would remain scoreless for the rest of the first half.

Stonehill came out of the half with back-to-back shots and was unable to connect before Assumption found the back of the net once more in the 57th minute of the game with an unassisted goal by Aviza. Just about a minute later, Lages capitalized on a through ball from Gurcan, which drove past the goalkeeper for a 4-1 Greyhound advantage. Assumption was able to use a foul at the 75th minute on Stonehill as another opportunity to add a goal to the score as Dias found Barnwell in front of the net for the game-winning tally, giving the Greyhounds the edge, 5-1.

Stonehill travels to Saint Michael's College for an 11 a.m. Northeast-10 matchup on Saturday, October 1.
