Coffey and Laffey combine for 55 points for Panthers
EASTON, Mass. (January 18, 2017) – Adelphi University, ranked seventh in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, posted the highest point total against Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the region, in three years with a 107-95 shootout victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.
Junior Michael Coffey (Monroe, New York/John S. Burke) and sophomore Jack Laffey (Middletown, New Jersey/Christian Brothers Academy) combined for 55 points to lead Adelphi to its third win in four games. Coffey netted a game-high 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting, including 4-for-12 from three-point distance, with five rebounds and two assists, while Laffey added 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 5-for-11 from deep, with four boards and three assists.
Sophomore Conor McGuinness (New City, New York/Clarkstown South) posted a double-double with 17 points and 14 assists, connecting on 6-of-11 shots, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, while freshman Austin Beech (San Diego, California/Cathedral Catholic) contributed 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Junior Manny Suarez (Cliffside Park, New Jersey/Marist) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Panthers.
Senior Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown), named to the Bevo Francis Award "Watch List" earlier this week, posted his third double-double of the season (23rd career) with 21 points and ten rebounds, adding four assists. Juniors KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) and Isaiah Bess (LaGrange, Maine/Hampden Academy) each netted 15 points for the Skyhawks. Lee made 7-of-10 shots and added three rebounds and four assists, while Bess made 7-of-12 shots off the bench. Freshman Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) contributed 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three boards, while junior Joel Berroa (Lawrence, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points and five rebounds.
Both teams shot over 60-percent from the field in the first half of a contest in which the teams combined for 164 possessions, including 88 in the first half. Adelphi finished shooting 57.9-percent from the floor (44-for-76), including 12-for-35 (34.3%) from three-point distance. Stonehill shot 56.5% (39-69) from the field, including 5-for-14 (35.7%) from beyond the arc. The Skyhawks held a 35-32 rebounding edge, but Adelphi outscored the hosts 10-5 in second chance points.

Adelphi's 107 points are the most by a Stonehill opponent since a 110-84 loss at Southern Connecticut State University on January 22, 2014, and the first time the Skyhawks have yielded 100-plus points at home since a 101-56 setback to Bentley University on November 25, 2001.
Adelphi scored the first nine points of the contest, but Stonehill recovered and used a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the night (16-13) after a Bess layup with 12:24 remaining in the opening half. The Skyhawks extended their lead to seven (28-21) with a layup from sophomore Michael Boen (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) with 9:11 to play in the half. The Panthers pulled even (34-34) with a layup from Coffey with 7:20 remaining, but Stonehill reclaimed a four-point edge (38-34) on a layup by Moreton a minute later.
Adelphi followed that with a 12-2 run to grab the lead back and stretch its advantage to six (46-40) with a Beech layup with 4:19 still to go before the half. Stonehill regained the lead (54-52) when Moreton capped an 8-0 Skyhawks spurt with a layup with a minute to go before halftime, but Laffey and Coffey followed with back to back triples to give the Panthers a four point halftime cushion (58-54).
Adelphi wouldn't relinquish the lead in the second half, but Stonehill pulled within a point twice in the first three minutes before the Panthers scored seven straight, sparked by a Laffey three, to open an eight point lead (72-64) after a Beech layup six minutes in. Laffey buried another three to stretch the Adelphi lead into double figures for the first time (77-66) with 13:22 to play.
Stonehill pulled back within five three times before the midway point of the half, but could get no closer as Adelphi used a 15-5 push to open a 15-point advantage (97-84) after a three-point play from McGuinness with 5:51 to go and the Skyhawks wouldn't get closer than 11 points the rest of the way..
Stonehill (10-8, 5-7 NE10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits American International College for an NE10 battle at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home the following Saturday, January 28, to host The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (14-5, 7-4 NE10) hosts Merrimack College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
