Largey drills school-record matching nine three-pointers for 29 points as Skyhawks net 16 threes overall
ALBANY, N.Y. (December 12, 2016) – Stonehill College freshman forward Daniel Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) poured in a school-record matching nine three-pointers to fuel an 83-71 victory over The College of Saint Rose, receiving votes in the most recent National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll, in a non-conference men's basketball matchup at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium tonight.
Largey spearheaded a Stonehill shooting effort which poured in 16 three-pointers overall, as the Skyhawks connected on 11-of-15 threes in the first half (73.3-percent) in building a 12-point halftime lead (44-32) they would not relinquish. He scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the opening half, burying all six three-pointers in the frame and first seven overall, to go with four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in 31 minutes off the bench. Largey matches Stonehill's single-game record for three-pointers set by Shaun Fein during the 1997-98 season, bettering his previous season-best of eight triples on his way to a season-high 31 points in a win over Queens (N.Y.) College on November 12.
Senior Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown), named the Spaulding/Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, added 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, converting all six free-throws to go with seven rebounds and six assists. He moves within five points of cracking the top ten of Stonehill's career scoring list with 1,469 points through 99 career games played. Junior Joel Berroa (Lawrence, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) contributed a career-high 16 points for the Skyhawks on 6-of-8 shooting, including 1-for-2 from deep, connecting on 3-of-4 free-throws with a career-best eight rebounds.
Stonehill, ranked ninth in this week's D2SIDA East Regional poll, finished shooting 59.1-percent from the field (26-for-44), including 16-for-26 (61.5%) from three-point range, draining 15-of-20 free-throws (75%) in the contest. The Skyhawks shot 71.4% (15-21) in the first half, including its white-hot 11-for-15 (73.3%) from deep. Saint Rose, ranked fifth in the region, was limited to 39% shooting (23-59), including 33.3% (9-27) in the first half, making 9-of-22 threes (40.9%) and converting 16-of-17 free-throws (94.1%). The Golden Knights posted a 32-27 rebounding edge and a misleading 20-0 scoring advantage in second chance points, with the visitors missing only 18 shots all night, just eight inside the three-point arc.
Senior Chris Dorgler (Floral Park, New York/Archbishop Molloy) led four Saint Rose players in double-figures with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, converting 5-of-6 free-throws, with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior Jack Jones (Sydney, Australia) added 14 points and four rebounds off the bench, while classmate Julian Lipinski (Melbourne, Australia) contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Junior Mical-Ryan Boyd (Hempstead, New York/Long Island Lutheran) rounded out the double-digit scorers with ten points and two assists.

The teams battled back and forth through the first ten minutes of the contest before Stonehill scored eight straight points, including a pair of Largey three-pointers, to take a seven point advantage (28-21) with 8:01 remaining in the first half. Junior Anthony Russell (Simsboro, Louisiana/Bridgton Academy) made two free-throws to stop the initial run, but the Skyhawks got back-to-back threes from sophomore Michael Boen (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) and freshman Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) to push their lead to 11 (34-23) with 5:47 left.
Saint Rose scored five straight out of a timeout to close the gap to six (34-28) after a Jones triple with 4:17 on the clock, but Stonehill answered with ten straight, sparked by two more Largey bombs to open a 16 point cushion (44-28) with 2:13 remaining before settling for a 12 point (44-32) halftime advantage.
Saint Rose was within ten (48-38) after a Dorgler layup four minutes into the second half, but Stonehill was able to open a 17 point lead (56-39) with a three by freshman Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) with 13 minutes to play. The Golden Knights trimmed the lead to eight (61-53) after a three by sophomore Pharroh Gordon (Manchester, England) with 8:50 remaining as well as following two Dorgler free-throws with 7:35 to play, but would get no closer.
Five straight points from Berroa pushed the Stonehill lead back to 13 (68-55) with 5:40 left and the Skyhawks lead wouldn't dip below double figures the rest of the way. Stonehill made 7-of-9 free-throws down the stretch and Largey added his ninth three-pointer with 1:08 to play to help seal the Skyhawks fourth straight win.
Stonehill (7-4, 4-3 NE10) has the next 17 days off for final exams and the holiday season before returning to action at Georgian Court University on Thursday, December 29, at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks' next home game is a New Year's Eve matchup with the University of Bridgeport, ranked sixth in the region, at Merkert Gym at 1 p.m. Saint Rose (9-3, 4-2 NE-10) hosts Philadelphia University, ranked fourth in the region, on Saturday at 3 p.m.
