Chargers limit Skyhawks to 38.6-percent shooting
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (January 10, 2017) – Stonehill College surrendered a halftime lead for the third game, shooting just 31-percent in the second half, as the University of New Haven claimed a 72-66 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Charger Gymnasium this afternoon.
Junior Mihailo Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) posted a double-double to lead four New Haven players in double figures with a game-high 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go with a game-best ten rebounds (three offensive) and four assists. Freshmen Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, New Jersey/Hightstown) and Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Connecticut/Norwalk) both closed in on double-doubles as well for the Chargers as Kane finished with 12 points and seven rebounds with three blocked shots, while Felizor totaled ten points on 5-of-9 shooting with nine boards. Sophomore Michael Bourke (South Orange, New Jersey/The Hun School) added 11 points, while junior Danny Upchurch (Bridgeport, Connecticut/Notre Dame Catholic) chipped in with seven points and seven assists.
Senior Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) posted his 25th career 20 point game to lead Stonehill, moving into seventh place on the program's career scoring list in the process. He made 9-of-16 shots from the field and converted both free-throw attempts, while dishing out a season-high seven assists with five rebounds. Logan moved past A.J. Rudowitz '10 (1,542 points) into seventh place on the Skyhawks all-time scoring list with his 1,557 points in 104 career games played.
Freshman Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) added 12 points and four rebounds, while classmate Daniel Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) canned all four three-point attempts in the first half for 12 points. Junior KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) rounded out Stonehill's double-figure scorers with ten points and nine boards as he nearly posted a second straight double-double.
New Haven shot 48.4-percent from the field (30-for-62), including 57.1% (16-28) in the second half, while connecting on 6-of-20 (30%) three-pointers and making 6-of-9 free-throws (66.7%). Stonehill finished shooting a season-low 38.6% (22-for-57) from the floor as it was held under 40% for the first time this season, including 31% (9-29) in the second half, connecting on just 5-of-19 (26.3%) three-pointers. The Skyhawks buried their first 16 free-throws for the night before finishing 17-for-18 (94.4%) at the line, while also posting an 11-4 edge in points off turnovers.

Stonehill, which had won eight of its first nine games of the year when holding a halftime lead, surrendered its third straight defeat in the last week when leading at the break. The Skyhawks carried a three-point lead (35-32) after an opening half which featured five ties and five lead changes, with neither team leading by more than six. New Haven quickly grabbed the lead after a Kane, Jr. three-pointer two minutes into the second half.
Stonehill wouldn't lead again, but remained within striking distance until the end. Junior Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, Rhode Island/St. Andrew's) stretched New Haven's lead to six (48-42) with a layup with 13:42 to play. The Skyhawks forced the seventh tie of the afternoon (52-52) when Lee capped a run of six straight points with a pair of free-throws with 7:35 left.
The teams traded baskets and then New Haven scored seven straight to open a seven point lead (61-54) following a layup by Bourke with 2:51 on the clock. Bourke drained a three-pointer to extend the Chargers lead to a game-high eight (66-58) that appeared to seal the win with 55-seconds to go, but Stonehill was able to close the gap to five (66-61) after sophomore Michael Boen (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) split two free-throw attempts with 29-seconds still to play.
Upchurch was fouled and made both free-throw attempts to restore New Haven's seven point lead after a timeout, but Lee drove through the lane to pull Stonehill back within two possessions (68-63) with 14-seconds remaining. The Skyhawks nearly got a steal coming out of a timeout, but Upchurch collected the ball and was fouled once again, draining both tries with 12-seconds to go that sealed the Chargers win despite a late three by Moreton with eight seconds left.
Stonehill (9-7, 4-6 NE10) returns to action on Saturday when it visits Pace University for an NE10 matchup at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next home game is Wednesday, January 18, when they host Adelphi University for an NE10 battle at 7:30 p.m. New Haven (8-7, 3-6 NE10) hosts Assumption College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
