Sacred Heart Hosts Volleyball in Penultimate Match of the Season

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (November 10, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped a Northeast Conference matchup at Sacred Heart from the William H. Pitt Athletic Center Friday night, falling in three sets, 3-0 (7-25, 22-25, 12-25).

Skyhawk Summary 

Sophomore Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) had six kills on a .500 kill percentage to lead Stonehill with six points. Freshman Georgia Murphy (Plano, Texas/John Paul II) recorded four kills, three digs, and one assist. The trio of senior Lauren McCloskey (Salem, N.H./Salem), junior Emma Graves (Berkshire, N.Y./Newark Valley), and freshman Abby Farrell (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) each recorded three kills. Freshman Amaya Parnell (Pepperell, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) had a team-high 11 assists with five digs McCloksey had the lone service ace for the Skyhawks in the match.

How it Happened

SET 1 | After Stonehill scored the first two points off Sacred Heart errors, the Pioneers notched the next seven and 11 of the ensuing 12 points to build an 11-3 advantage. It was all Sacred Heart for the remainder of the set despite McCloskey tallying two kills, the Pioneers would go up 1-0 after a 25-7 opening frame.

SET 2 | The second set was a different story for the Skyhawks, as the two teams found themselves tied four different times and the score sat at 7-7 with four different Skyhawks recording kills. Stonehill had a 4-0 run that put them ahead 9-7, even going up by as much as seven points at 17-10 as Berardino tallied three kills during the run. Six of the following seven scores went to the Pioneers as they rallied back into the set, down just 18-16. Sacred Heart would tie things up at 19-19 and carried their momentum into the final stages of the set, winning 25-22 to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

SET 3 | The Pioneers continued to play well going into the third set, notching the first four points to take an early lead. Berardino also carried her strong play into the third frame, recording two more kills to get the Skyhawks offense going as they were only down 6-5. Sacred Heart responded again, scoring four straight points as a 17-3 run catapulted the Pioneers to a 23-8 lead. Stonehill continued to play hard, notching four of the next five points but Sacred Heart would win the third and final set, 25-12.
