FDU Sweeps Volleyball in NEC Road Battle

HACKENSACK, N.J. (October 13, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team went down in three sets in a Northeast Conference matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Stratis Arena Friday night, 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 22-25).

Skyhawk Summary

Senior Lauren McCloskey (Salem, N.H./Salem) had a match-high 12 kills to lead all scorers, also notching three digs, a service ace, one solo block, and one block assist to score 14.5 points with a 50% kill percentage. Junior Emma Graves (Berkshire, N.Y./Newark Valley) recorded seven kills with a team-high two block assists as well as two digs and an assist. Sophomore Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) had five kills, eight digs, and an assist for the Skyhawks. Freshmen Georgia Murphy (Plano, Texas/John Paul II) and Lauren MacKellar (Northville, Mich./Northville) each had four kills in the loss. Senior Kristen DeLorenzo (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) led Stonehill with 11 digs and had four assists. Sophomore Delaney Mihelich (Fullerton, Calif/Rosary Academy) and freshman Amaya Parnell (Pepperell, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) each tallied a team-high 13 assists.

How it Happened

SET 1 | The first set started close as the teams found themselves tied four times in the first ten points of the match as the NEC foes were tied 5-5 but two kills from McCloskey and one from Berardino gave the Skyhawks a 10-6 lead. Stonehill clung to a 15-13 lead, but FDU went on an 8-1 run to build a 21-16 lead. The Knights secured the first set with a 25-21 victory.

SET 2 | The Skyhawks jumped out to an early lead as they went up 7-3 through the first ten points of the second set. Stonehill continued to grow their advantages as their lead doubled to eight points, 16-8. The Skyhawks held their eight-point lead late in the set as they were ahead 19-11 but FDU stormed back with a 10-2 run to tie things up, 21-21. The Knights converted on four of the next five points to complete their comeback and take the second set, 25-22.

SET 3 | FDU held a small advantage at the beginning of the third set, but the Skyhawks remained within three points until they knotted the score at 10-10. The two conference opponents would tie each other up nine more times throughout the set as they remained deadlocked at 22-22 late in the set. The next three scores went to the Knights as they won the match in three sets with a 25-22 win.
