Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Match Against Manhattan

EASTON, Mass. (October 17, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team hosted Manhattan College at Merkert Gymnasium Tuesday night for their final non-conference matchup of the season, falling in three sets, 3-0 (24-26, 24-26, 18-25).

Skyhawk Summary

Sophomore Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) led Stonehill with nine kills and had eight digs with a service ace. Junior Emma Graves (Berkshire, N.Y./Newark Valley) tallied seven kills along with two block assists and a solo block to record nine points. Freshman Abby Farrell (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) had six kills and recorded a match-high and season-high kill percentage at .667 to go along with a team-high four block assists. Senior Kristen DeLorenzo (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) notched a team-high nine digs and three service aces as well as tallying two assists. Freshman Amaya Parnell (Pepperell, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) led the Skyhawks with 10 assists while posting two service aces and two digs.

How it Happened

SET 1 | Parnell started off the match with a service ace as the Skyhawks jumped out to a 10-4 lead with two more service aces from sophomore Delaney Mihelich (Fullerton, Calif./Rosary Academy). The next five points went to the Jaspers as they trimmed their deficit to just one point, 10-9. Manhattan took their first lead of the set at 16-15 which led to a Stonehill timeout. The Jaspers held onto their lead but the teams traded points as the Skyhawks kept themselves within one, 22-21. A pair of Berardino kills gave Stonehill a 24-23 lead but Manhattan scored the next three points to win the opening set 26-24.

SET 2 | The second set started back and forth as the score was tied 7-7 with six different ties during that span. Manhattan scored the next six points to take a 13-7 lead, but Stonehill responded and cut the lead in half at 16-13. The Skyhawks couldn't pull within any less than three points until late in the set when they inched closer to the Jaspers at 24-23. Stonehill tied it up after an ace from DeLorenzo, but Manhattan scored the next two points to win the second set 26-24.

SET 3 | The Skyhawks scored the first three points of the third frame and nine of the first 11 points as Graves started strong with three kills during their run as they led 9-2. The Jaspers began to cut into the Stonehill lead, pulling within four points at 15-11. A 6-0 run from Manhattan gave them a slight edge over the Skyhawks as they led 17-15. Stonehill tied the score at 17-17 before the Jaspers rallied for seven of the final eight points of the match to sweep the Skyhawks in three sets with a 25-18 win.
